Lucy Lighting Trojan Isolators - Street Lighting
The new slimline Lucy Lighting Trojan isolator range has been redeveloped with a brand new innovative style which has been designed to satisfy all street lighting applications requiring double pole isolation. Lucy Lighting has also introduced a 3 way Trojan Midi isolator to complement the exisiting Isolator range, along with the Mini and Maxi - the Lucy Lighting Trojan isolator range includes a 2, 3 and 4 way modular isolation system for street lighting.

Lucy Lighting Titan Cut-outs - Street Lighting
The Lucy Lighting Titan cut-out has many unique features for a compact unit of this size. Titan cut-outs provide improved flexibility and safety with Cam lever handle to ensure safe street lighting fuse removal. The Titan cut-out provides increased access to allow easier cabling for incoming cable terminations - accessories include 2 x mini entension troughs to accomodate 2 and 3 way cable entries and a triple entru extension trough. Single or double pole Lucy Lighting Titan cut-outs are available for street lighting applications.

By fittingthe ZEBC range of ballasts you are assured of flexibility in control, without the need to change the ballast as yourcontrol needs develop! The ZEBC ballast range provides ‘enabled’ control. Lanterns can be simply configured withconventional photocells, and upgraded to part-night dimming or full CMS control at a later date. Whilst some re-wiring will be required, the ballast can remain undisturbed and, dependent upon the gear-tray configuration, maynot need to be touched beyond plugging a lead onto the ‘Data Point’ cable from the ballast.

The most common method of providingthis is by the use of PFC capacitors. When connectedto the supply it is possible for many hundreds of ampsto flow momentarily. The magnitude and durationof the inrush current depends upon the value ofcapacitance (measured in μF), and the impedance ofthe supply network. This current is capable of weldingtogether contacts of relays and other switchingdevices. It is also possible for these currents to fusesemiconductors, and it is reliant on good productdesign to ensure that the effect of inrush has beentaken into account.PFPower factor can dramatically change thecharacteristics of a load. Whilst a load may be 100Wand draw about 0.4A at unity power factor, it will drawover 1A with a power factor below 0.35 (commonfor discharge loads with failed PFCs). Also variouscommon lamp or ballast faults can give rise to asituation where just the PFC is connected. In this casealthough no power is consumed the current throughthe PECU will also be above 1A. Hence the PECU mustbe capable of operating the load over the range oflikely load conditions, including common failure modesof lantern control gear.RatingsIt is important to ensure that the maximum ratings arenot exceeded, care must be taken to observe both thecurrent rating and also the maximum capacitive loadthat can be connected.ECGWhilst most modern electronic control gear – includingLED Drivers (ECG) is power-factor corrected some low-wattage equipment may not have full PFC correction,resulting in very poor power factor. ECG is generally amore benign load than magnetic ballasts, and it usuallyhas a much wider operating voltage range. With thewider range there is usually a peculiarity arising fromthe constant-power approach of most ECG. As thevoltage rises the line current falls, however the oppositeis also true, so that a 10% drop in voltage can resultin a 10% increase in line current. This is important toremember when sizing cables and circuit protection.Burning HoursA major consideration is how accurately and consistently theload is controlled over a long period of time. PECUs havebenefits over time-clocks since they turn the lights on whenthe light falls, ensuring that light is provided when there ispoor visibility prior to dusk, yet providing optimum control onclear evenings, taking full opportunity of good daylight. Thetotal number of hours that a PECU operates the light for eachyear is called the annual burning hours. Table 1 (right) showsa TYPICAL example of the burning hours for PECUs with variousswitching ratios and switching levels. They switch the supply ON to a loadwhen the light level falls beneath a given value (usually at Dusk), andswitch the supply OFF when it rises above another level (usually at Dawn).The ratio between the two light levels is known as the switching ratio.When the ON level is lower than the OFF level (e.g if the load switchedON at 70Lux and switched OFF again at 105Lux, then the unit has a ratioof 1:1.5). As can be seen from Table 1, below positive ratio units havesignificantly longer annual burning hours than negative ratio unitsWhen the ON and OFF levels are the same (1:1 ratio)Most streetlighting loads have a warm-up time during which the lampachieves full brightness. This is typically a number of minutes, and theidea of negative ratio units is that the ON level needs to predict when thelamp will achieve sufficient output, whereas the OFF level is when thelight is no longer needed. They were the predominantsensor 20 years ago and are still sometimes used. Itis very arguable whether CdS sensors meet RoHSrequirements and they are also subject to some long-term drift.Photodiode SensorsIt is possible to construct a semiconductor diode toproduce a current proportional to the incident lightlevel. The currents generated are small and needcareful amplification by a circuit that compensatesfor thermal effects. The fundamental physics ofsemiconductor junctions means that siliconphoto-diodes have significant sensitivity to lightoutside the visible spectrum. Although semiconductortechnology can limit this, other measures e.g. filtersare needed for matching of sensitivity to that of thehuman eye. This is usually achieved by the additionof a filter that blocks light outside the visible spectrum.Filters can take a number of forms, but are usuallybulk-coloured glass slips added to the photodiodeassembly during manufacture.A variant of the above is to add a filter that blocks all visible light, so that the photodiode is only sensitive to Infra-red light. This can be incorporated into a PECU that is only sensitive to IR, and virtually insensitive to visible light.This means that the PECU can be used where it is partially illuminated by visible light, often produced by the lightthat is being controlled by the PECU. Such a product is the Zodion ‘Lowlight’. It is typically used in bollards, wherethe PECU is incorporated into the base compartment and is illuminated by visible light from the lamps within thebase reflected from the inside of the cover. The lowlight is insensitive to this light, and operates by sensing the IRcomponent of daylight transmitted through the cover.There are 3 cautionary notes:• Such PECUs can only be used with light sourcesthat generate virtually no IR (Incandescent lampsgenerate huge amounts of IR)• That the PECU, although insensitive to visible light,will still be affected by very high levels of visiblelight. The arrangement of the PECU within theluminaire should minimise such light.• The proportion of IR to visible light in daylight varieswith weather conditions so the PECU will not switchas accurately as a conventional PECU. An increase inannual burning hours of up to 25% can be expected.Photodiode sensors can also be incorporated intointegrated circuits providing an ideal format for digitalprocessing of data from the sensor. Whilst manysensors include external filters it is also common touse two sensors, one sensitive to the full-spectrum theother with a filter. The latestdevelopment for our part-night photocells includesautomatic GMT/BST Daylight Saving correction. Thetransition is achieved by observing changes in NightLength and automatically switching between GMT andBST. As the unit doesn’t know the exact calendar it hasa period of uncertainty around the spring and autumntransition. The unit compromises the OFF period duringthe days around this transition, to ensure that the lightis never OFF more than 15 minutes before the ‘OFF’transition, and is always ON 15 minutes after the ‘ON’transition (within about 10 days of each transition thelight may be ON for an additional hour in either theevening, or morning). Apart from this period the unitaccurately tracks GMT and BST. If DLS units are sitedunder heavily shaded tree canopies they will misjudgethe season and will transition between GMT and BSTlate, and return to GMT early.Programme OptionsThe photocell is programmable to allow for various partnight options The periods of control are factory set, butcan be made in 30 minute steps and typical periodsare shown in the table below.
