Healthcare Company Cuts Development Time and Costs by 75% with Pragmatic Works Task Factory

  1. 1. Case Study Healthcare Company Cuts Development Time and Costs by 75% with Task Factory
  2. 2. Joint Commission Resources is a global, knowledge-based Business Needs organization that provides innovative solutions designed to help health care organizations improve patient safety and quality. An independent, not-for-profit organization. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Alan Rubel, Database Administrator for Joint Commission Resources, was responsible for creating and managing web services through Salesforce that are used to bi-directionally move account, contact, marketing and financial data. On average Rubel was building 15-20 web services a month, writing custom C# code for each one. In addition he was implementing a web based reporting platform. Rubel started searching for a software tool that would simplify and expedite this arduous process. He tried several tools but they were not meeting his specific needs. Many of them were not using the Salesforce metadata correctly or outputted a CSV or XML file that would then have to be converted into the appropriate format. Because Joint Commission Resources is fully committed to the use of Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Integration Services for ETL, they needed a solution that would seamlessly allow SSIS to move their data in and out of Salesforce. www.pragmaticworks.com PAGE 2
  3. 3. “We needed a faster and easier method that didn’t require days Solution writing C# code, and that would integrate with SQL Server directly rather than having to constantly converting the metadata to SSIS.” In April 2013, Rubel engaged with Pragmatic Works, a Microsoft National Systems Integrator with Gold Competencies in Business Intelligence and Data Platform, to begin using a software tool called Task Factory (http://www.pragmaticworks.com/Products/Task-Factory.aspx). Task Factory offers essential, highperformance components and tasks for SSIS that are not natively found within SSIS and that eliminate the need for custom programming. Rubel explains, “We needed a faster and easier method that didn’t require days writing C# code, and that would integrate with SQL Server directly rather than having to constantly converting the metadata to SSIS.” After a brief testing period with a free trial download of Task Factory, (http://www.pragmaticworks.com/ Products/Task-Factory/TrialDownload.aspx), Rubel was convinced that Task Factory’s Salesforce.com Source & Destination components were exactly the solution he needed. Task Factory’s Salesforce.com Destination component allows users to easily add data from a source system into a Salesforce.com account with little to no manual configuration. This component’s UI allows mapping of columns from data to Salesforce.com objects. It also delivers great performance by using the Salesforce.com bulk processing capabilities. Task Factory includes more than 40 tasks and components, many of which Joint Commission Resources are now using to speed up SSIS development. www.pragmaticworks.com PAGE 3
  4. 4. Benefits Speeds up Development by 75% or More By utilizing Task Factory, Joint Commission Resources was able to save over two months of manual effort in building web services. It was previously taking Rubel one day per web service. With Task Factory it is taking an average of two hours per web service. This is a time savings of 75% per web service, a total savings of over 90 work hours per month on this project. Increased Cost Savings By enabling their Database Administrator to be more productive, Joint Commission Resources realized a costs savings of over $25,000 in the first month of use. Rubel continues to use this feature daily, accruing additional savings continuously. Ease of Maintenance Joint Commission Resources have also seen huge value in the ease of maintenance for the web services with Task Factory. Now, when a user updates a Salesforce object, the metadata change is reflected immediately in the object. They no longer have to manually find the change and update their Salesforce. com account. Summary Task Factory has been shown to dramatically increase SSIS performance, allow for faster and reusable SSIS development, improve data quality and even allows users to connect to the cloud and other non-traditional data sources. Joint Commission Resources was able to cut development time and costs by 75% by using Task Factory. Investing in Task Factory will provide your development team with an incredibly high ROI within days of purchase.
