Brief History of Munich• Name München derived from „Mönche” – Monks• Derived from Monks of Benedictine Order who founded the city.• Founded in 1158• Bridge was built across the Isar for toll collection [Salt Route]• 1175 Munich granted city status• 1506 became Capital of Bavaria• Hofbrauhaus built in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V [Munich was center for counter-reformation]• 1634/1635 Bubonic Plague killed about 1/3• 1806 became capital of the new Kingdom of Bavaria
World War I & II• Outbreak of WWI in 1914• 1916 three bombs fell on Munich• February 1919 The Bavarian Soviet Republic was proclaimed• May 3, 1919 the Soviet Republic was put down.• 1923 Hitler‘s Beer Hall Putsch (attempted overthrow of Weimar Republic)• 1933 National Socialists (Nazi) took power• After WWII in 1945 Munich was meticulously rebuilt• Before the War, locals took lots of pictures!• 1972 the Olympics (Created public transportation – U-Bahn/S-Bahn)
