3. THE CHALLENGE
The world’s urban population
is set to rise from 3.4 to 6.4
billion people in 36 years and
the greatest challenge will be
to plan efficient and well
designed settlements that
allow communities to thrive.

9. PRUDENT
Knockroon is a development in
Scotland and forms part of the
Dumfries House estate.
Together with this thriving
visitor’s attraction it draws upon
the region’s architectural history
to create a new development that
can form part of a long term,
heritage-led, regeneration plan
for the area.
10. LOCAL
Coed Darcy is located on one of Europe’s
largest former brownfield sites, formerly
home to a BP oil refinery.
Draws on Wales’ vernacular to deliver a
thriving new town of 4000 homes, including
schools, community services and retail.
11. ADAPTABLE
The Prince’s Natural House, located at
the BRE in Watford, showcases how
an eco home can still take traditional
inspiration, whilst providing all the
comforts of modern living.
Its adaptable layout means that it can
be built as a single house, or split into
two flats.
Versatility, health, natural materials
and a fabric-first approach all play
key parts in what make the Natural
House an exemplar new home.
12. COHERENT
Upton, Northampton, is a
sustainable urban extension that
challenges the conventional cul-de-
sac model.
It presents a new development
with pepper-potted housing,
beautiful architecture and
Sustainable Urban Drainage
systems (SUDS) that not only
prevent flooding, but offer much
needed green space.
13. EQUITABLE
Our Enquiry by Design process
brings together different
communities voices to ensure
that the planning process reflects
an array of opinions, needs and
desires.
In doing so we can create and
maintain vital, diverse and
thriving communities across the
world.
14. HIGHBURY GARDENS
Highbury Gardens is a mixed-tenure
development in the
heart of London. It blends the
best of traditional living with
functional contemporary
living.
It is an excellent example of
where our principles have
been put into practice
15. “How we perceive the world… will mean
replacing our obsession with pursuing
unlimited growth and competition with a
quest for well-being and co-operation. If
we can rebalance our perception and
restore a sense of proportion of how we
relate to the world… it seems possible to
me that we could create the conditions that
ensure human societies thrive indefinitely.”
