  4. 4. Doxycycline Tablets Recommended Dosage The recommended dosage of Doxycycline tablets is given below: ➔The recommended adult dose in adults is 200 mg on the first day of treatment followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day. This may be given as either a single dose or divided doses administered every 12 hours. ➔In the management of more severe infections, 200 mg daily should be given throughout the treatment period. Therapy should be continued at least 24-48 hours after symptoms and fever has subsided. If used in streptococcal infections, therapy should be continued for 10 days to prevent the development of rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis. © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  5. 5. Doxycycline Tablets Recommended Dosage The recommended dosage of Doxycycline tablets is given below: ➔For children over 12 years of age, the recommended dosage schedule for those under 50 kg is 4 mg/kg on the first day and 2 mg/kg daily subsequently. For children over 50 kg the usual adult dose is used. © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  6. 6. Doxycycline Tablets Contraindications contraindicated in patients with the following conditions: Doxycycline tablets are Known hypersensitivity to Doxycycline Hyclate or any inactive component of this medication. ➔Rare cases of benign intracranial hypertension have been reported after taking tetracyclines and oral retinoids, such as isotretinoin or etretinate, and vitamin A. Concomitant treatment is therefore contraindicated. ➔Doxycycline is contraindicated in children under the age of 12 years and in pregnancy. ➔ © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  7. 7. Doxycycline Tablets Side Effects of Doxycycline Tablets The most common adverse effects of Doxycycline tablets are gastrointestinal effects which are attributed to irritation of the mucosa. Such effects include anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, glossitis, dysphagia, enterocolitis and inflammatory lesions (with monilial overgrowth) in the anogenital region. Instances of oesophagitis and oesophageal ulceration have been reported. It appears that most of these patients took doxycycline immediately before going to bed. © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  8. 8. Doxycycline Tablets Warnings And Precautions Use of Doxycycline tablets may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, the antibiotic should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. ➔Bulging fontanels in infants and benign intracranial hypertension in adults have been reported in individuals receiving tetracyclines. These conditions disappeared when the medicine was discontinued. ➔Incision and drainage or other surgical procedures should be performed in conjunction with antibiotic therapy, when indicated. ➔ © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  9. 9. Doxycycline Tablets Warnings And Precautions Prescribing Doxycycline Hyclate in the absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria. ➔If you are taking iron or calcium preparations (including vitamin preparations that contain iron or calcium) or antacids, you must take them at least two hours before or two hours after Doxycycline to make sure there is no problem with absorption. ➔ © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  10. 10. Doxycycline Tablets Overdose Symptoms Tetracyclines, including Doxycycline, generally have low toxicity. Severe toxicity following acute overdosage of Doxycycline tablets is unlikely, with nausea and vomiting being the most common effects after ingestion of therapeutic and overdose amounts. © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
  11. 11. Doxycycline Tablets Overdose Treatment Treatment of Doxycycline overdose may include immediate discontinuation of medication, dilution with water or milk and general supportive care. Antacids may be useful in managing gastric irritation. In most cases, gastrointestinal decontamination is not required. Plasma levels are not clinically useful and specific laboratory monitoring is not needed unless otherwise indicated. © The Swiss Pharmacy, Geneva Switzerland
