History 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society <ul><li>Prevention project first started in Antwerp in 2004 (“Tram 12”) </li></ul><ul><li>Project to reduce large and small conflicts and nuisance on public transport </li></ul><ul><li>Secondary school scholars often seen as cause of this nuisance </li></ul><ul><li>Project developed by vzw Doedèskadèn in cooperation with De Lijn </li></ul><ul><li>Part of the safety & security plan of De Lijn (‘Safe Journey’) </li></ul><ul><li>Today: all provinces in Flanders, several cities </li></ul>

Objective of Trammelant 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society <ul><li>General satisfaction of all stakeholders using public transportation </li></ul><ul><li>Decrease of feelings of unsafety </li></ul><ul><li>Enhancing mutual understanding and respect between personnel of De Lijn and youngsters </li></ul><ul><li>Supporting preventive actions: intervene before problems grow </li></ul><ul><li>Initiation of best practices in cooperation with local government, schools and other youth organizations </li></ul>

Vision of Trammelant 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society <ul><li>We approach youngsters as they are , NOT as some of them sometimes behave </li></ul><ul><li>Start from the own childhood: presenting adults also as youth scholars </li></ul><ul><li>No pedantic sermons or warnings, BUT dialogues </li></ul><ul><li>Experiential aim: to experience the effects of the own behavior onto someone else </li></ul><ul><li>Experiences of both parties are important </li></ul><ul><li>Participation is the key </li></ul>

Who can participate? 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society <ul><li>Selection of 15 schools/year/province </li></ul><ul><li>Selection based on results of Security monitoring system of De Lijn  includes nuisance and incident reports </li></ul><ul><li>Also strategically based selections in cooperation with local partners </li></ul><ul><li>In each school: one class selected = representative for the use of public transport (majority of the class) </li></ul><ul><li>Aim: 14 – 16 years </li></ul>

European involvement: EU CIVITAS-ELAN 9/12/2011 Connecting Youth with Society <ul><li>European funding for sustainable mobility </li></ul><ul><li>One of the measures in cooperating city (Gent) = related to safer public transport </li></ul><ul><li>Idea for upgrading the Trammelant-project </li></ul><ul><li>Multifunctional bus equipped with didactical materials </li></ul><ul><li>Launched in November 2009 </li></ul><ul><li>Today: 5 buses </li></ul>
