A game engineer is a software engineer, programmer, or computer scientist who primarily develops codebase for video games (Means whole collection of source codes used to build a particular application) or related software, such as game development tools. (Like 3D game engine) Game engineering has many specialized skills all of which fall under the term of "game engineer" .A game engineer should not be confused with a game designer, who works on game design. (Will work on the game story line, names of the characters…etc)
If you do not enjoy working with computers and such then you will not be pleased with this job seeing as 78% of the work is on computers using special programs. To be happy with the job you will have to have the following interests…. -Computers -3D programs -Electronics -Game console games
The technology required for this career is very important. You will need the latest versions of 3D modeling with C++ and java installed on it and any other software or program then need. (Varied on the type of games they make). You will also need high tech computers to test the finished product and look for any glitches or errors that need to be fixed. They often use gaming computers like Alien-ware with over a terabyte of memory. (I could not find any examples of the software they use because some companies like to keep it secret and stuff.)
Knowing What Works An important skill is a solid knowledge of what makes a video game good or bad. General Skills Game designers need to have strong written and communication skills, be very organized and work well within groups as well as individually. Game Knowledge A detailed knowledge of current popular games and consoles is important for success in the video game design field. Programming Basic skills in programming languages, and understanding game functionality. (C+, C++ ANSI, ISO, IEC…etc) Knowing programming gives them an added edge to help guide the programmers on their teams to create the action/effects they want for the game.
Participating in health and safety training, as required For this job you will need to have check ups because your in side all day working on the computer. That can cause eye damage, and often occurring migraines. As well as figure hand and neck damage. You will want to take breaks every 2-3 hours.
Teamwork is essential, you will have to be willing to work with others and show respect to their ideas and opinions. And you must put effort into your part to give the company a good name, and because it’s the right thing to do!
You must be one time because you have a dead line that you MUST meet. And you have to follow instructions, you cant just go and do things your way or see something that you don’t like and change it. And take your time don’t just quickly pull something up, but put effort into it. And make a schedule for yourself to keep yourself on time.
Mathematics Game designers need skills in geometry, probability and other types of mathematics that help calculate dimensions in design detail. Education A college education fine-tunes the game designer's artistic skills and techniques. Video game companies require a bachelor's degree in design or other related field If you’re interested in programming games, you’ll want to look for a computer science/programming degree that focuses on creating interactive programs (most commonly in C or C++) ( Collage)
