  • Thanks for the intro Oliver. \nAnd thanks for having us back. This is our second time at TBU and we are just excited to see how much it has grown. When Oliver asked us to come back to do the keynote, we jumped at it. We think that TBU is a fantastic conference and we wanted to be part of it. \n\nSo what can you expect from us?\n\nWe’re going to pump you up and get motivated for your sessions over the next two days. You have the top people in their fields sharing their knowledge with you and we want to make sure that you leave this room today excited and ready to receive maximum value from this conference that you possibly can. We want to kick start that brain to have it swirling with ideas so when you leave Porto, you’ll have the tools and information to bring your travel blog to the next level. \nSo let’s get this party started. \n\n
  • Yeah, what a year it’s been. In such a short time travel blogging has grown up. \nSo many opportunities that are coming our way. \nCompanies are learning the benefit of working with us and they’ve figured out how to work with us. \nAnd we’ve all learned that TB is more than a hobby, it’s a career that you can make money at. \nAnd we want to thank you guys because it is you who have made that happen. It is your writing, your photos, and videos that inspire people to travel. And come back to your blog again and again for inspiration. \nAnd you should be excited about that. \nI know we are.\n
  • Ask anyone who knows us and they will say one thing for sure: We love Travel Blogging. I remember when we presented at TBUmbria the tweets were “Where do they get their energy” Their excitement is contagious” “I want some of what they are on.” \n\nWe kind of laughed at these tweets because we didn’t realize that we were so energetic and then when we thought about it, we said, yeah we are filled with energy because we finally found what we want to do in life. We look forward to getting out of bed and we love what we do. \n\nWhen we were going over what we want to talk about, we said..let’s look at this catch phrase, Follow Your passion and the Money Will Come” It’s great words to live by, but you can’t let one phrase define your business. \nYes, passion plays in becoming a success. but there’s a lot more to it than that. \nSo Let’s talk about passion. \n
  • Yeah just look at the definition of the word.  \n \n:an intense desire or enthusiasm for something \n:strong and barely controllable emotion \n:ardent love - fierce intense love\n\nAll of these descriptions are almost painful. \nPassion is something that you can’t live without. \nWhenever you hear someone talk about their path to success, you never hear them say it was easy. \nMost people suffer for their passion, they make sacrifices, they give up a lot and they do whatever it takes reach their goal. \nHaving that passion compels them to put in the hard work and the long hours because they need it to be a part of your life.\n

  • We searched for our passion for 10 years, heck we’ve been searching all of our life, but we were really feeling it the last decade. \nWe were working too hard, not seeing one another and we felt empty. \n\nI remember having those discussions over dinner saying “If only I knew what I wanted to do with our life, I know we can be a success. \nWe were constantly searching.....\nThe irony was that In other peoples eyes we were already considered successful. We had great careers in movies, we were making good money and we were well respected in our fields. \nBut our careers had stalled. there was always that one piece missing, we were living a half a life. \n\n\n\n
  • As other other people were moving ahead in our business we weren’t. They were getting the big 100 million blockbusters while we were getting the 20 million dollar B-movie or TV Series. The were moving up and winning awards while we were stuck in a rut. \nWe would pull our hair out trying to figure out WHY All these people were getting bigger movies and better positions than us? Why were they getting ahead and we weren’t. We were just as good as them, we were professional and we worked hard so why were they getting the breaks? \nDave: Did any of you ever have the same thing happen in your jobs? Joe Schmo got the promotion or the big account when you work so hard. You ask, why does everything come so easy for them? I’m sure you did.\n\nWe kept thinking that if only we got that big break, everything would be ok. We’d be making more money and we’d have the freedom to whatever we like. And who hasn’t thought that before. \nWe never put it together that passion and career should go hand in hand. \n
  • We had been asking ourselves that question for years and\nIt took us 10 years to finally answer the question...why?\n\nThey reason they were getting the positions over us, is because they loved what they were doing. They lived and breathed movies, and took courses and stayed up to date on every element of their job. We didn’t do that, we were too busy travelling every spare moment we had. \nWhy weren’t you going mountain biking or rock climbing. \nWe realized that we never once used the words I love my job. They all had passion for the job. We went into those jobs for all the wrong reasons. Money. \n\n
  • And we thought, if we could reach a level of success in something that we don’t really love, imagine what we could do if we followed what loved. We love adventure, we love travel, we love being together....so if we pursued our passion..and the money will come. \n\nAnd believe me, that’s what we thought. \nWe thought it was that simple. We thought the money would roll in. We have a great idea to be an adventure couple and someone is going to hire us to do a TV show. \nWe hired a publicist, we signed up for the world’s longest cycling race, we did TV appearances and even signed with a production company to do a travel show. Nothing could stop us now!\nWell, 6 months later, nothing happened.\nOur TV show fell apart, we ran out of money, we were living in a trailer that my parents leant us to get us through the tough times and found ourselves having to go back to work. \nIt was back to the drawing board - Reanalyze, advantage\nBut the difference this time was, We knew what we wanted to do with our lives. \n\n
  • So this time we sat down and made a plan. We set goals and gave ourselves a deadline. \nWe realized that the adventure travel couple was a great idea, but we weren’t ready for TV yet and that is when we discovered blogging.\n\nWe made a plan as to what we wanted from the blog. Why were we doing it and what did we want to achieve. \nWe knew that we wanted to be spokespeople and motivational speakers and become well known travel personalities so that maybe one day we will get that TV show. \n\nIT was like going at it from a reverse angle. \nOur blog was going to be our vehicle to help us achieve our goal. And this plan was going to get us there.\n\n\n\n
  • We spent an entire year learning about the business while saving up enough money to finally leave our jobs for good. We knew that if we had a plan, we wouldn’t have to go back to our old careers again. \nWe all know everyone here loves travel, photography, writing and making videos, but do you love the business of travel blogging. If you don’t, you will fail because it is hard. \n\nDo you have a passion for the business of Travel Blogging? You need to ask yourself that question because it is the business of blogging that takes up the majority of your time. \n\nWe spend more time working now than we did in our previous careers and we left those careers because we thought we worked too much. But the difference is, we love what we do now. \nBut the most important lesson that we learned throughout that year, Passion alone isn’t enough.\n\n\n

  • Ok, we talked a lot about passion, but what makes up the other pieces of success. \nSo we made our own little venn diagram.\nPassion is merely part the foundation to a successful business model. \nSecond - Talent, everyone out here has a talent..You have to recognize that talent, take charge of it. \nTalent - Are you a great communicator, teacher, connection, ideas, numbers, seo\nWhat people pay you for - contribute to magazines, lead tours, write books, spokespeople, develop courses, be a consultant\n\nCombine all three and discuss..... Most people find themselves here...talent and money....(no passion)\nPassionate and pay for....but no talent (either hire someone or learn it)\nMost travel bloggers find themselves here... passion and talent....\nso by combining all 3 of these things, you will have a solid foundation for your travel blog and it will be the basis of your business plan. \n

  • Biggest obstacle facing travel bloggers. \nNever complete the circle - Afraid to ask for money. \nNever know what people will pay them for. \nThe don’t think they have anything to give, \nBy being honest with yourself and answering those three questions, it makes it simple. • Can’t have the one price for all that so many people feel entitled to. It’s not the same industry as the old school journalism. It’s not how much per word, because each blog has different readers and followers. \nThere is nothing more annoying than other bloggers email us and asking, what should I charge. I don’t know what you’re worth. But you should. \nYou know where you can add value, you know what your audience is, you know what companies will work with you. The same companies won’t work with you as us, or  yourself.\nWhat will satisfy you. What will make you happy. goes back to goals. In the end if your not happy it’s not worth it. \nWhat is your time worth to you. How much time will you be putting into this campaign and what is that worth to you. \nYou need to tailor it to the companies size, size of your blog, commitment of time, length of relationship\nSo what we wanted to do was reach out to some people and ask them how these three elements have made them a success.\n

  • So when something goes wrong, own it, learn from it and move on. Don’t rant online or complain in forums. \nRemember, everything that is said online stays online. And for some reason, people seem to forget that.\nEverything you share, write and put out there should at least in some way coincide with your principals. \n\nSo manage your keystrokes as you would manage your reputation. Very carefully. \nWe all have different business models and ways of working and there is no one right or wrong way and that is why there is such a diverse group of people speaking to you today, we all work differently and we have all taken our different paths to success. \n\n
  • So when you are listening to the sessions this weekend, think about what unique qualities you have that you can bring to the table. Learn from the practices that the speakers share with you, but think about how you can make it your own. What sets you apart from others. \nAnd make sure you think about these three things. Passion, Talent, Pay You For. \nDon’t be afraid to fail, make your plan, and give your company the time it needs to become a success. Don’t expect things to happen overnight. Perserverance will pay off. \n\nJust because you are just starting out doesn’t mean that there isnt’ room for you. Think about your passion and how you can incorporate that into your travel blogging. \nRemember travel blogging is in its adolescence, there’s going to be growing pains. We’re learning, companies are learning and our audience is learning. Be willing to experiment and try new things. This is an exciting time for all of us, the sky is the limit and if you have a good idea, there is a good chance that someone will hire you for it. \n\n
