  2. 2. Background <ul><li>You have just been appointed as Chief HR officer designate at Foodie, a global food company, but with operations around the world. The company is listed on the NYSE and in Zurich. The company employs 50,000 people. </li></ul><ul><li>The current HR Director, 82 year old Peter Paperbased , is retiring at the end of the year and will advise the German Government on pension reform. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1991, the company implemented a mainframe based HR system from a nameless German software company based in a small town near Heidelberg. The system runs the payroll and produces the various reports that the government requires, since implementation there have been minimal updates. Most HR processes are manual. Every plant has one or more HR generalists and lots of spreadsheets. </li></ul><ul><li>In 2004, the team responsible for the bestselling chocothins defected to the competition, and the company found it really difficult to find a successor </li></ul>
  3. 3. Background <ul><li>At the last meeting with the financial analysts, the CEO, Boris Bottomline, was asked “please outline your succession management plans” when he couldn’t answer, the 19 year old equity analyst from the large Swiss bank downgraded his rating. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Background <ul><li>Christina Cashflow , the CFO, joined the company 4 years ago from Procter and Gamble. She has restructured the finance department, and they are proud of their “lights out processing” and state of the art shared service center in outer Mongolia. </li></ul><ul><li>Arnold ABAP , the CIO, is dating Christina, so he will do what ever she asks him to do. The finance IT is now really world class, thanks to the close relationship between finance and IT. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Background <ul><li>Andrew Android, the partner at BPO-ueber-alles, is Boris’ golf and yachting partner. </li></ul><ul><li>Thomas Trotsky, the head of the workers council is chairman of the German society for the prevention of technology adoption in HR. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Background <ul><li>Your brother-in-law, Brian Banker , is HR director at a large German Bank. 2 years ago they did something with shared services. He now drives a bigger BMW because of the cost savings he achieved. He was invited to speak a fancy HR event in Zurich with Dave Ulrich . </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>“ What would you do in the 90 days on the job?” </li></ul>Question 1
  8. 8. <ul><li>“ Boris has asked you for an outline business model. </li></ul><ul><li>What would you propose as the key components of this model? </li></ul><ul><li>He wants this to link to your KPIs and options plan . </li></ul><ul><li>He also wants to know how we compare to the competition and other industries.” </li></ul>Question 2
