Audience Research

By Ollie Maidment

Audience To discover the target audience of our artist i decided to find out who was listening to similar artists. I did this by finding artists similar to ours on youtube and looking at their statistics. The statistics button lets you see various informations about the video including the most common age, and gender of the people who watched it. This is called the demographic. Statistics button
Luna Del Rey L ana Del Rey is an American singer/songwriter who has recently reached a high level of fame with her release of the single “Video Games”. This Song has over 20,000,000 views on youtube alone. We looked at the statistics from this and five other songs of hers on youtube and found out that the audience is predominately females between 13-24, with a secondary audience of older males between 45-54.
Ed Sheeran The data provided from Ed Sheeran’s Youtube channel shows the main audience is females between 13 -24. Ed Sheeran is a british singer/songwriter who plays acoustic guitar in a lot of his music. Sheeran is relatively new in the english music scene and has recently released his first ‘mainstream’ album. Sheeran’s music has been played on a variety of different radio stations including KISS (London music station aimed at teens), MAGIC (Plays mellow songs, More popular with older listeners) and BBC Radio One (Most Popular Radio Station, broadcast all over the UK).
Maverick Sabre Maverick Sabre is an English/ Irish vocalist from London. He is associated with R&B and Folk and is know for his eerie vocals and guitar playing(a lot like Laura Whitehart). From the video analysis on Sabres youtube videos, it would appear that he is most popular with males aged between 18 - 34 & girls aged 13-17. This shows that the males who watch the video are more mature than the girls, witch seems to be a continuos pattern.
What Dose this mean? From looking at the audiences of similar artists we feel the people most likely to watch our music videos are girls aged 13 - 25 and males aged between 18-34. The concept of boy-girl relationships seems to be key in music videos with this audience, and may be something that we incorporate in our video.
HOWEVER!!! We should not alienate anybody from watching and relating to our video, we need to find a balance between our main audience and everybody else so it is enjoyable for everyone. We could do this by using older actors in our video rather than people from the age category of our main audience. We can never no how our video will be viewed until it is made but we can do everything to try and ensure we get our concept across
