  4. 4. THE FIRST STEP TO SAFETY AND SECURITYWhatever Rasulullah r has said, is the absolute truth and Haqq. Therecannot be an iota of doubt in this. If he taught the Ummah to recite anyayah, wazifah or du`a for their safety against any eventuality, noMuslim would doubt the authenticity of that. They would recite suchan ayah, wazifah or du`a, believing with conviction that its recitationwould afford him safety only through the will of Allah I.But we should realize that on the one hand where the Shariah hastaught the Ummah the relevant verses, wazaif and du`a as a safetymeasure, then it also taught the Ummah to take the necessary securitymeasures and safety precautions physically as well as practically...Forexample, it would be foolhardy and unwise for a person to leave thedoors of his house open or unlocked, and then recite the relevantwazaif and go to bed. The Holy Qur’an urges us : Y ‘AYYUHAL-LADH•NA MAN¤ KHUDH¤ IDHRAKUM O you who believe! Take your precautions…. An Nisa 71The Holy Qur’an also urges us in these words: WA A`IDD¤ LAHUM MASTA£A`TUM MIN QUWWATIW WAMIR-RIB£IL KHAYLI TURHIB¤NA BIH• `ADUWAL-LHI WA `ADUW-WAKUM.
  5. 5. And prepare against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (firearms, tanks, artillery etc) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy…. Al Anfal 60On one occasion Rasulullah r advised a companion to tie his cameland then rely on Allah r for its safety. It is clear from the above thatconfining oneself to the recitation of the relevant verses, wazaif anddu`a, and not adopting the physical and practical security measures, isin conflict to the teachings of the Qur’an and Ahadith. One iscompelled by Shariah, to adopt physical as well as spiritual measuresagainst crime and calamities. Physical would be, amongst otherthings, locking and securing ones property while spiritual would meanto recite Ayatul Kursi, the four Quls and salaah. The one complimentsthe other. Through the barakah of both types of measures, Allah I willgive the reader the safety he needs, Insha-Allah.ARE SECURITY MEASURES CONTRARY TO TAWAKKUL?Such measures are not contrary to tawakkul in Allah I.In fact, it is tawakkul in its true form for, despite the fact that a personhas secured his property physically, he then recited Ayatul Kursi, thisclearly shows that his reliance is not in the security measures he hastaken, but rather In Allah I and Allah I alone. Otherwise why wouldhe recite the Ayatul Kursi? In fact he will be commended, for he hasacted upon the Sunnah of Rasulullah r by adopting both measures! In the following pages the excellence, virtues and fazaail of AyatulKursi are mentioned. Read them and build your conviction in theverse’s effectiveness. After reading them, continue reading it. Let everymember of your family act upon it. By doing this and taking the necessaryprecautions, you will see how Allahs I help descends. Discover this foryourself.
  6. 6. SECTION 1THE EXCELLENCE OF AYATUL KURSIHadith 1Ubay ibn Kaab t reports that Rasulullah r asked him: “Which is thegreatest verse of the Holy Quran?” He replied: “Allah I and his Rasul rknow best.” Rasulullah r repeated the question several times. Finally,Ubay ibn Kaab t answered : “Ayatul Kursi.” Rasulullah r said: “OAbu Mundhir (Ubay’s title), I commend you for knowledge. By Allah Iin whose power lies my soul that this verse has a tongue and two lips. It(Ayatul Kursi) continuously chants the glory of Allah I beneath the arsh.”PERPETUAL SAFETY FROM THE SHAYTANHadith 2Ubay ibn Kaab t reports that I had a storeroom for storing dates. Itsuddenly occurred to me that the dates were becoming less (meaningsomeone was stealing). On a particular night I decided to stand guardwhen an animal resembling a lad materialized before me. I greetedhim. He answered my greeting. I asked him “Who are you? A man or ajinn?” He replied: “I am a jinn.” I asked him to extend his hand so Icould see it. He put out his hand. It resembled the forelegs of a dog andhis hair, too, was like that of a dogs. “Are all the jinn created in the samemanner?” I asked. “more powerful than I am” he replied. When Iasked him why he stole, he replied: “I came to find out that you lovegiving charity. I felt that I should also have a share of the food.” “Whatwill save us from your mischief?” asked Ubay ibn Kaab t, he replied:“Ayatul Kursi in Surah al Baqarah. Whoever recites it in the evening willbe safeguarded against our mischief till the morning; and whoeverrecites it in the morning will be safeguarded against our mischief till theevening.” In the morning Ubay ibn Kaab t went to Rasulullah r and
  7. 7. related the nights incident to him. Rasulullah r remarked: “He hadspoken the truth whereas he is (by nature) a great liar!”Hadith 3Asqa Bakri t reports that Rasulullah r came to them in Suffah wherethe muhajirin used to assemble. A person asked: “Which is the greatestverse of the Holy Quran?” Rasulullah r responded, saying: ALLHU L ILHA ILL HUWAL-AY-YUL-QAYÛM. L TA’KHUDHUHÛ SINATUW-WA L NAWM. LAHÛ M FIS-SAMWTI WA M FIL-ARˆ. Allah testifies that there is no other deity to be worshiped as Allah but He; and so do the angels and the men of learning:they also bear witness that He is the Sole Executor of Justice, there is no Allah to be worshiped but He, the All-Powerful, the All-Wise. Al Imran 18 QULIL-LHUMMA MLIKAL-MULKI TU’TIL MULKA MAN TASH’. WA TANZI`UL MULKA MIM-MAN TASH’. WA TU`IZZU MAN TASH’. WA TUDHILLU MAN TASH’. BIYADIKAL KHAYR. INNAKA `AL KULLI SHAY’IN QAD•R. (Moreover) I will grant them protection from theirenemies.”
  13. 13. AYATUL KURSI: ONE QUARTER OF THE HOLY QURANHadith 5It is reported from Anas t that Rasulullah r asked a certaincompanion if he was married. He replied. “I do not have so muchmoney as to get married.” Rasulullah r “Do you know Surtul-Ikhlas?”He replied: “Yes”. Rasulullah r remarked: “That equals to a quarter ofthe Holy Quran. Do you know Suratul-Kafirun?” He replied: “Yes.”Nabi r said “it equals to a quarter of the Holy Quran”. He furtherasked “do you know Suratuz-Zilzal?” He replied, “yes.” Rasulullah rsaid: “That equals to a quarter of the Holy Qur’an. Do you knowSuratul-Fath?” He replied: “Yes”. Rasulullah r said: “That equals to aquarter of the Holy Qur’an. Do you know Ayatul Kursi?” He replied:“Yes”. Rasulullah r said: “That equals to a quarter of the Holy Qur’an.Get married, get married, get married!”He said this thrice. This means that anyone who knows the aboveverses is not a poor man, he is wealthy.BENEFITS OF CONTINUOUS RECITATION OF AYATULKURSIHadith 6Anas t reports that Rasulullah r said that whoever recites Ayatul Kursiafter every Fardh salaah, will be protected till the following salaah.Only a Nabi (prophet) or a Siddiq (truthful person) or a Shahid (martyr)will remain steadfast upon its recitation.Hadith 7Hasan ibn Ali t reports that a person asked Rasulullah r “O Nabi ofAllah I, what benefit is there for a person who recites Ayatul Kursi after

Rasulullah r said: “Ayatul-Kursi”Hadith 9A certain person asked Rasulullah r: “O Prophet of Allah r, which isthe greatest verse of the Holy Quran?” He replied: “Ayatul Kursi.”Then the person asked: “Which verse would you recommend for yourUmmah so that they could profit therefrom?” He replied: “The lastportion of Suratul Baqarah because it is from among the treasures ofAllah I beneath the arsh and it has not excluded any goodnesspertaining to this world and the next, without including it.”Hadith 10Muhammad ibn Sawi t reports from his grandfather t that Rasulullahr said that whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every Fardh salaah theonly impediment between him and Jannah is death. Therefore as soonas he dies, he enters Jannah.Hadith 11It is reported from Abdullah bin Abbas t that Rasulullah r said:“Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every salaah, Allah I will give him aheart of a grateful person; and Allah I will endow him with the goodactions of the Siddiqin (truthful people); and He will grant him therewards of the Ambiya u; and He will shower upon him His specialmercies; and the only thing that prevents him from entry into Jannah isdeath. As soon as he dies he enters Jannah.”
  15. 15. BARAKAH IN FOODHadith 12A’ishah y reports that a person came to Rasulullah r and complainedthat there was no barakah blessings in his home. Rasulullah r asked:“Why are you negligent of Ayatul Kursi? Whoever reads it upon anyfood, Allah will impart barakah to such food.”AYATUL KURSI: GREATER THAN THE HEAVENS, EARTH,JANNAH AND JAHANNAMHadith 13Abdullah bin Masud t is reported as saying that Allah I has not madethe heavens, the earth, Jannah and Jahannam greater than Ayatul Kursi(Ayatul Kursi is greater than all these creations of Allah I).Hadith 14Abdullah bin Masud t is reported as saying that no heaven, no earth,no stretch of earth and no mountain is greater than Ayatul Kursi.DRIVING AWAY THE SHAYTAN, PROTECTING ONESBELONGINGS AND HOMEHadith 15It is reported from Abdullah bin Masud t that a certain person wasjourneying to some place. En route he came upon a jinn. The jinnchallenged him: “Can you fight me and overpower me? If you do then Iwill teach you a verse. If you enter your home reciting this verse, theShaytan would not dare to enter your home.” He said: “Yes”. Both ofthem began wrestling. When the man defeated the jinn said:“Continue reciting Ayatul Kursi. Whenever a person enters his home,
  16. 16. reciting Ayatul Kursi, Shaytan runs away from such a home and while heruns, he lets go a sound from his back passage resembling the braying ofan ass.” Abdullah bin Masud t says that someone from the gatheringremarked that it could only be Umar t who fought the jinn.Abu Hurairah t reports from Nabi r that there is an ayah in suratulBaqarah, which is the chief of all the verses of the Holy Qur’an. If it isrecited in a home occupied by Shaytan, he will run away from such ahome. (It is Ayatul Kursi)Hadith 16Abdullah bin Masud t narrates that a person said to Rasulullah r: “OMessenger of Allah r, teach me something through which Allah I willgive me benefit.” He said: “Continue reciting Ayatul Kursi. This will bea means of protection for you, your children and even those houseswhich are near your house.”Hadith 17Abdullah bin Umar t narrated that once Umar t asked the people:“Who will tell me which verse in the Holy Qur’an is the greatest? Andwhich verse will spur people to be just and fair? And which verse ismost effective in instilling fear into the hearts of people? And whichverse is most effective in building the hopes of people?” No oneanswered. Abdullah bin Masud t finally responded by saying that heheard Rasulullah r saying on the mimbar that the greatest verse of theHoly Qur’an is Ayatul Kursi; and the verse most effective in urgingpeople to be just is:
  17. 17. INNAL-LHA YA’MURU BIL `ADLI WAL ISNI WA •T’I DHIL QURB WA YANH `ANIL FASH’I WAL-MUNKARI WAL-BAGHYI. YA`I¨UKUM LA`ALLAKUM TADHAKKAR¤N. Allah enjoins adl (justice and worshipping none but Allah alone) and ihsaan (to be patient in performing your duties to Allah, totally for Allahs sake and in accordance with sunnah) and giving help to kith and kin (i.e. to give them financial assistance, visiting them, caring for them) and He forbids you from fahshaa (sins, evil deeds, illicit sex, disobedience to parents, lies, etc.) and from munkar (all that is prohibited by the shariah) and from baghya (oppression of all kinds). He admonishes you so you may take heed. An Nahl 90And the ayah most effective in instilling fear in the hearts of people is: FAMAY YA`MAL MITHQLA DHARRATIN KHAYRAY YARAH! WA MAY YA`MAL MITHQLA DHARRATIN SHARRAY YARAH.
  18. 18. So whoever does good to the weight of an atom shall see it. And whoever does evil to the weight of an atom shall see it. Az Zilzal 7,8And the verse which raises the hopes of the people is: QUL Y `IBDIYAL LADH•NA ASRAF¤ `AL ANFUSIHIM L TAQNA£¤ MIR RAMATIL-LH. INNAL-LHA YAGHFIRUDH-DHUN¤BA JAM•`. INNAH¤ HUWAL-GHAF¤RUR-RA•M. Say: O my slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing sin), dont despair of the mercy of Allah. Verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. Az Zumar 53Hadith 18Abdullah bin Abbas t says that whenever Rasulullah r used to recitethe last ayah of Suratul Baqarah and Ayatul Kursi, he used to smile andsay that both these verses are from the treasures of Allah I. Andwhenever he used to recite:
  19. 19. ...MAY-YA`MAL S¤’AY-YUJZA BIHI. Whoever does any evil, he will be given its reward (punishment). An Nisa 123he used to say: INN LILLHI WA INN ILAYHI RJI`¤N ...To Allah we belong and to Him is our return. Al Baqarah 156He would then display extreme humility before Allah I.Hadith 19It is reported that whenever Abdur Rahman bin Awf t used to enterhis home he would recite Ayatul Kursi in all the corners of his home.Hadith 20It is reported from Hasan t that Rasulullah r said: “ Jibril u came tome and said there is a stubborn jinn who wishes to harm you. Therefore, whenever you retire to bed recite Ayatul Kursi.”Hadith 21Ali t said that the chief of all the verses of the Holy Qur’an is AyatulKursi.Hadith 22Ali t has also reported that he heard Rasulullah r saying that whoeverrecites Ayatul Kursi after every salaah the only thing that
  20. 20. prevents him from entry into Jannah is death. Whoever recites it onretiring to bed Allah I will protect his home and the homes of hisneighbours.Hadith 23Ali t said that he cannot fathom a person who is born a Muslim or hehas accepted Islam intellectually, that such a person allows even onenight to pass without reciting Ayatul Kursi. Had the people known howexcellent this verse is, they would not have abandoned it.He said that Rasulullah r had been given it from the treasures beneaththe arsh. He further says: “As for me I have never spent a single nightwithout reciting it thrice. I recite it after Esha in the last two rakaat ofWitr and also on retiring to bed.”Hadith 24Awf bin Malik t reports that Abu Dharr t was seated by Rasulullah r,He asked: “O messenger of Allah r, which is the greatest verse revealedto you?” Rasulullah r recited “Ayatul Kursi (till the end).”Hadith 25It is reported from Muaz bin Jabal t that Rasulullah r had left somedates of charity with him for safekeeping. He placed them safely in aroom. It occurred to him that each day it was becoming less. So hecomplained about this to Rasulullah r. He remarked: “This is thehandiwork of Shaytan. Be on the lookout for him!” That night Muaz twaited for him. When a portion of the night had passed the Shaytancame in the form of an elephant. When he reached the door, hechanged his form and entered the room through a crack in the door.He approached the dates and began eating them. Muaz t wrappedhis clothes tight around himself and approached him, saying: “There isnone worthy of worship except Allah I and Muhammad r is His
  21. 21. messenger. O enemy of Allah I, you devour the dates of sadaqah!Whereas the poor are more deserving than you! I am arresting you andtake you to Rasulullah r. He will disgrace you!” Pleading, the Shaytanpromised him that he would never steal again. So he let him go. In themorning as he approached Rasulullah r, he asked: “What happenedto your prisoner?” he replied “he promised never to steal again (so I lethim go).” Rasulullah r said: “He will come again. Be on the lookout forhim!” The second night he again waited for him. He came again anddid the same. He tried to arrest him but he promised never to stealagain. So he let him go. The next morning he related the wholeepisode to Rasulullah r. Again Rasulullah r warned him that hewould come again. On the third night he came again and began stealing. Muaz t said tohim: “O enemy of Allah I, twice you had promised not to steal andnow you are doing the same! I am not letting you go.” He beganpleading: “I am a person with wife and children and I come from asfar as Nasibain (between Musil and Syria). Had I found anything lessthan this I would not have come here! There was a time when I usedto be a resident of this city of yours (Madinah Munawwarah) whenMuhammad r was appointed as a Nabi. During that time two verseswere revealed to him. (It was then that we were expelled from this city.We relocated to Nasibain). The two verses are such that if they arerecited in any home the shaytan would not dare to enter such home!”He said this thrice. Then he promised: “If you let me free I will showyou which are the two verses.” Muaz t said: “Fine, I will leave you.” Hesaid: “Ayatul Kursi and the last portion of suratul Baqarah.” (asmentioned above). So Muaz t let him go. In the morning he went toRasulullah r and related to him all that had transpired between theshaytan and him. Rasulullah r remarked: “That devil had spoken thetruth yet (by nature) he is a liar!” Muaaz t says: “Thereafter I wouldconstantly recite the two verses and blow on the dates. I noticed nomore shortage.”
  22. 22. Hadith 26Abu Usaid saadi t reports that he harvested the crops of his orchardand stored them in a room. The room used to be frequented by thejinn. They used to steal the crops causing him much loss. Hecomplained to Rasulullah r who said: “Abu Usaid, that is a jinn. Be onyour guard. When you see that he has entered the room, say I commandyou in Allahs I name that you should at once go with me to Rasulullahr!” When the jinn did come he told him what he was told to say. Thejinn said: “O Abu Usaid, please do not take me to Rasulullah r. Ipromise in Allahs I name that I will never set foot in your home againand I shall never steal your fruits again! I will (also) show you such averse that if you recite it in your home, regard me as dead! If you read itupon any utensils none would dare to open them!” I gave him anassurance. He became pleased and said: “The verse is Ayatul Kursi.”The sahabi went to Rasulullah r and related to him the whole episode.Rasulullah r remarked: “He spoke the truth, yet he is a liar.”Hadith 27Abu Umamah Sad ibn Ajalaan t says that Rasulullah r said thatanyone who recites Ayatul Kursi after Fardh salaah, the only thing thatprevents him from going to Jannah is death.THE ISMUL AZAM IS CONTAINED IN AYATUL KURSIHadith 28Abu Umamah t says that Rasulullah r said that Ismul Azam (TheGreatest Name of Allah I) through which Allah I assuredly fulfilspeoples needs is contained in surahs Baqarah, Al Imran and Taha. AbuUmamah t says that when he searched for the Ismul Azam in Baqarahhe found it to be in Ayatul Kursi. And when he searched in Al Imran hefound it to be in the words :
  23. 23. ALLHU L ILHA ILL H¤. AL-AYYUL QAYY¤M. Allah ! There is no god but He, The Living; The Self-subsisting, Eternal... Al Imran 2When he searched in Ta-ha he found it to be in the words: WA `ANATIL WUJ¤HU LIL-AYYIL QAYY¤M. And all faces shall be humbled before Al-Hayyul Qayyum (the attributes of Allah meaning the ever-living, the one who protects and sustains all that exists)... Ta Ha 111Hadith 29Abdullah bin Abbas t says that Rasulullah r was stationed in a room ofAbu Ayyub t. There was a basket in which some food was kept. It wasnoticed that a cat would come in, through the window and steal fromthe basket. Abu Ayyub t complained about this to Rasulullah r. Heremarked: “This is a jinn. Therefore if he comes again, say to him thatRasulullah r commands you not to go away.” When he came AbuAyyub t told him the above words. The jinn said: “O Abu Ayyub t, letme go! By Allah I, I will never do this again!” Hence he let him go.He related this incident to Rasulullah r. This happened twice. Thethird time when he caught him, the jinn said: “Should I not teach yousuch words which, if you read, the Shaytan would not dare to come
  24. 24. near your home on that night and the next day and the next.?” He said:“Yes.” He said: “Make a habit of reciting Ayatul Kursi.” So he let himgo. He related to Rasulullah r the whole episode. Rasulullah rremarked: “He had spoken the truth whereas he is a great liar!”Hadith 30Abu Ayyub t is reported as saying that he was stationed in a room of ahouse . The jinn would come and steal the household items. Hecomplained to Rasulullah r. He said: “If you see him, say in Allahs Iname, I command you to go with me to Rasulullah r.” When the jinndid come he told him what he was told to say. The jinn said: “I willnever come again. (Let me go)” So Abu Ayyub t let him go.When he approached Rasulullah r he asked him what had happened. He related the whole incident. Rasulullah r said that he would surelycome again. Thereafter, he came twice or thrice. Each time hepromised never to return. When he caught him for the last time, hebegan pleading: “Please let me free. I will teach you a deed upon which,if you remain steadfast the shaytan will not dare to come near you. Andthat is the recitation of Ayatul Kursi.”He went to Rasulullah r and related to him the episode. Rasulullah rsaid: “He spoke the truth whereas he is a great liar!”Hadith 31Abu Dharr t says that he asked Rasulullah r: “Which is the greatestverse that was revealed to you?” He replied: “Ayatul Kursi.”IN TIMES OF DIFFICULTYHadith 32Abu Qatadah t is reported as saying that Rasulullah r said that

  36. 36. SUMMARY OF THE EXCELLENCE OF AYATUL KURSI1. Ayatul Kursi is the greatest verse of the Holy Qur’an.2. It is the chief of all the verses of the Holy Qur’an.3. It protects its reader from the mischief of the Jinn and Shaytan from the morning till the evening if recited in the morning; and from the evening till the morning if recited in the evening.4. It is from Allahs I treasures beneath the Arsh.5. It is equal in reward to a quarter of the Holy Qur’an.6. Whoever recites it after Fardh salaah, he will remain in Allahs I protection till the next salaah. And only a Nabi, Siddiq and Shahid remains steadfast upon it. The only stumbling block between him and Jannah is death.7. When recited upon any food, barakah is imparted to such food.8. It is weightier than the heavens and earth, Jannah and Jahannam.9. Whoever recites it on entering his home Shaytan departs from such a home10. Whoever recites it, he, his children, his home, his belongings and the homes of his neighbours are all protected.11. Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi and the last verses of Suratul-Baqarah the shaytan does not enter his home for three days.12. If recited and blown on any utensils, no jinn will be able to open that utensil.13. The Ismul Azam (The Greatest Name of Allah I) is contained in Ayatul Kursi.14. The one who recites it will be given protection from thieves.15. Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi and the last verses of Surah Baqarah in times of difficulty, Allah I comes to his aid.16. Whoever recites it when going to bed, Allah I appoints two angels to guard him.
  37. 37. 17. Whoever recites it after Fardh salaah, he is endowed with a heart of a grateful person and a tongue which is continually engaged in Allahs I remembrance. Moreover, Allah I will give him a reward of a Shahid and a reward of a Siddiqs deeds.18. Whoever recites the following verses in the presence of a woman giving birth, then blows on her, her labour would become easy. They are a) Ayatul Kursi, b) Inna Rabbakum, c) Suratul Falaq, and d) Suratun Nas.19. Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi and blows on his property the Jinn and Shaytan would not dare to come near it.20.
