  1. 1. ==== ====The Church Consultants are able to assist a church through crisis situations. Their experienceand understanding of the various situations within the church that can harm ministry areinvaluable. Find out what are some of the crises that are dealt with by churches and how to dealwith them.http://thechurchconsultants.com==== ====It is not easy to face a church financial crisis. Here are ten tips that will help you manage yourselfthrough the crisis:Remind yourself that this crisis is likely "about" more than money. Ask yourself, "why now?" Whatelse is going on in the life of the congregation?Review your own purpose and goals as well as that of the congregation. While priorities may shiftin a crisis, it is important to keep your eyes on the horizon.Find someone outside the congregation to be a sounding board. You are likely too close to thecrisis to see it clearly. Look for someone who is calm and asks good questions.Look for the calmest leaders in the congregation to connect with. Do not take your cue from themost anxious. Anxiety is contagious, and so is calm.Maintain your own spiritual practice through this time. Now more than ever it is important toprovide spiritual support for yourself.Share information appropriately with the congregation. Do not keep the crisis a secret, but do notspread panic, either.Keep your head. Do what helps you stay calm: go to the gym, listen to music, crochet or watch aball game.Focus on facts. Get information that is as clear and accurate as possible. Share those facts withothers, both leadership and the congregation.Ask someone in your family of origin for their thoughts on the crisis. You may be surprised at thesolid help you get.Define your own views on the crisis, to yourself, and to others, at every opportunity.Margaret Marcuson works with clergy who want to be better leaders and churches who want todevelop their ministries. She is the author of Leaders Who Last: Sustaining Yourself and YourMinistry (Seabury, 2009). She served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Gardner,Massachusetts for thirteen years.
