Using conventions of real media texts: A2 main and ancillary tasks
Using conventions of real media texts: A2 main and ancillary tasksLorna Holland
Here is a link to my blog post which features mycompleted music video (A2 main task). Also, here are some existing music videos that Ilooked at to identify conventions of the genre.
What conventions did I use? I made my video fade-in from a black screen and fade-out to a black screen as virtually all of the videos I analysed contained this. This popular convention creates a full-circle effect bringing the video from a clear start to finish I used lots of mid-shots as this was the most commonly used shot across the music videos I investigated. I also used the unconventional camera shot of a low-angle shot for variety, an example of technical code The boys costume is brighter coloured and more indie, demonstrating the characters more outgoing personality. In contrast, the female character is wearing a more feminine, floral dress which is more stereotypical „female‟ and portrays her more reserved personality, which is symbolic code The shot in my music video where the lyrics say “in the twilight” faces the camera directly into the sun to create the illusion of twilight, which is also symbolic code The images I have used reflect the genre of the song I chose. This links to the learned cultural images of music videos – you have an expectation of what sounds will accompany the visual, which is audio code The font I used for the song title at the end is quite plain in comparison to the font I used in my ancillary tasks, due to the simplicity of the music videos ending and to ensure it is readable in the limited time it is onscreen for, an example of written code
My magazine Existing magazine advertsadvert (ancillarytask 1)
What conventions did I use? I included the release date of the digipak as all adverts have this so readers know when they can get it The majority of the advert is taken up by an interesting image designed to stand out to the audience I included a rating of the digipak by a well- known newspaper, as many adverts feature these to reassure readers the digipak is good The fonts I used in both of my ancillary tasks are quite decorative and feminine which again reflects the genre of the song and also appeals to the female target audience – written code
Here is my digipak available to view viaSlideshare (ancillary task 2) Examples of pages from existing digipaks
What conventions did I use? I made my front page be dominated by an image as nearly all of the digipaks I have researched have this convention I created a housestyle to stick to throughout my digipak, and also linked it to my magazine advert for similarity and ease of recognition Within my digipak I ensured that most of the pages were dominated by images rather than text, as images seem to be more of a selling point for digipaks compared to text in the product
