HATICE'S New Media Study Case

 1. 1. New Media Study Case Podcasting By: Hatice A.
 2. 2. What is Podcasting?

A podcast is a collection of digital media files which are distributed over the Internet, often using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers. The term podcast, like "broadcast", can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.

 3. 4. What are the technologies that underpin Podcasting?

Mp3

Audio

Videos

RSS feeds

Online radio

Atom feeds

 4. 5. Who controls Podcasting?

Podcasting can be controlled by anyone who creates the Podcast or hosts a Podcast. It can be used by radio shows, students, teachers, news media websites, artists or even personal uses by everyday people who are seeking a form of entertainment.

 5. 6. What current channels of information and media will be affected by Podcasting?

The current channels of information and media that are affected by Podcasting are web based channels all over the internet which distribute knowledge, ideas and opinions all over. The difference between this new type of media involving Podcasting and the old types, such as radio and television, is that the sources of where they come from are harder to track down, as everything on television and radio is moderated. Anyone is allowed to post anything on the internet.

 6. 7. Who should seek to control these new media channels?

If the government sought control of these new media channels, many people would consider this as a violation of freedom of speech. The only people who can control these new media channels are the users who update the websites with information and the websites that host them such as Wikipedia, LiveJournal, etc. The host sites have more control than the users, however, because they do not want “bad” media on their sites, causing lawsuits or other issues.

 7. 8. How far should freedom of speech be allowed to go?

Freedom of speech should be allowed to go as far as an individual is allowed to go in expressing their views, beliefs and values. However, an individual should not be expressing them in a violent, threatening manner that intimidates others. There is an extent to what you can say and distribute publicly, especially around the internet.
