1. 1. Structures!
 2. 2. Structure Resources!!!!

PEOPLE

Architect – person who designs buildings and other structures

Engineer – person who applies the principles of science and mathematics in the design and construction of a project

 3. 3. Continued…

General Contractor – person or company that takes overall responsibility for the construction project

Sub-contractor – person within the company with skills needed for a particular job

Seven Resources of Technology

Capital

Money from public and private sources

Mortgages

Time

Building a structure takes a long time

Information

Plans, bids, specifications

 6. 6. Seven Resources of Technology

Energy

Materials

Steel

Concrete

Lumber

Brick

Tools and Machines

Bulldozers, cranes, drills, welding tools, etc.

 7. 7. Beam bridges

The simplest kind of bridge is called a beam bridge. These are used when crossing short distances. They strength of a beam bridge is determined by the strength of the beam used in its construction.

 8. 8. Arch Bridge

This type of bridge uses a curved structure above an opening to support the load of a bridge. This type of bridge used commonly because the material that makes the arch remains very strong even under compression. Made from concrete and steel.

 9. 9. Suspension Bridge

Longest type of bridge used to bridge wide spans. Uses steel cables to hang the deck, or roadbed from towers. Modern suspension bridges have two tall towers to which the cables are attached.

George Washington Bridge Golden Gate Bridge
 10. 10. Cantilever Bridge

Looks like two diving boards facing each other. The sections are firmly attached at their ends. If they do not meet, another section could be added to link them. Requires a huge structure support on each end.

 11. 11. Buildings

There are four basic types of buildings:

Residential

Commercial

Institutional

Industrial

 12. 12. Investigate the structure…

What do you need to consider when developing building?

Design (architect)

Size (energy consumed)

Cost (capital)

Materials (steel, wood, concrete)

Time

Climate/ region built in (windy, wet, hot)

 13. 13. Activity

Working in teams of two, your task is to build the tallest structure you can using

10 strands of spaghetti

1 sheet of paper

12’’ of masking tape

Structures must be freestanding ( structures cannot be taped to desk or taped to paper flat on desk, lean against something, or be held up with hands )

Make some plans and sketches of your ideas before you begin to use the supplies as you do not get replacements.

 14. 14. Reflection Writing Assignment

W rite an well-developed paragraph that addresses the following:

What problems did your team encounter in planning and constructing your structure?

How did you overcome these problems?

Compare and contrast your structure with the tallest structure that won the competition

If you could redo this activity using the same materials -

What would you do different?

Why?
