  6. 6. Academic Medicine • Hierarchical Progression – Hired into a department – Clinical Instructor – Assistant Professor – Associate Professor – Professor • Expected criteria for promotion • Tenure / Non-tenure tracks
  7. 7. Academic Medicine • Pros: – Variety – Teaching – Interaction with colleagues – Work with underserved populations – Part of a multi-specialty integrated group • Cons: – Pay is typically less – Competing demands
