  1. 1. Virtual Exchange From language learning to interdisciplinary activity to connect learners. Teresa MacKinnon Principal Teaching Fellow, University of Warwick, School of Modern Languages and Cultures
  2. 2. What is Virtual Exchange? “virtual exchanges are technology-enabled, sustained, people-to-people education programs.” ( Virtual exchange is a form of student-centred learning whereby students in geographically distant locations engage in dialogue with the aim of developing greater understanding of the ‘other’ and the ability to collaborate using online technologies.
  3. 3. Terminology • E-tandem • Telecollaboration (O’Dowd 2006; Dooly, 2008; Guth & Helm, 2010 ) • Online Intercultural Exchange (O’Dowd, 2007; O’Dowd & Lewis, 2016) • Globally networked learning (Starke-Meyerring and Wilson 2008) • Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) (Rubin & Guth 2015) • Collaboratories (Wulf, 1989; Cogburn 2003) • Virtual Exchange (Exchange 2.0 coalition; European Parliament 2017)
  4. 4. Living in an Interdependent world • The world is increasingly interdependent and there is an urgent need to develop a deeper understanding of this interdependency and to address major global challenges through multilateral and intercultural collaboration
  5. 5. Being part of a Global ‘knowledge society’ • Intercultural, international and global competencies are required for employability in the global ‘knowledge society’. There is also a need for greater attention to notions such as critical global citizenship and civic engagement. “The seven top characteristics of success at Google are all soft skills: being a good coach; communicating and listening well; possessing insights into others (including others different values and points of view); having empathy toward and being supportive of one’s colleagues; being a good critical thinker and problem solver; and being able to make connections across complex ideas.” Washington Post, 2017
