  1. 1.  Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter to colonize an area in North America.  In 1585, Raleigh sent a group of settlers to an area called Virginia (present day N.C.).
  2. 2. The purpose of this colony? And more Riches!
  3. 3.  Upon arrival, the English colonists struggled: 1. They were at conflict with the Natives. 2. They arrived late in the growing season which meant that they would have to starve through the winter.  Thecolonists decided to go back to England.
  4. 4.  In1587, the settlers returned to North America.  Lacking food and supplies their leader, John White, returned to England.  He leaves behind 117 settlers including his family.
  5. 5. Because of a war with the Spanish, White could not return to Roanoke for another… Year. 2Years. 3Years.
