Supply chain, logistics leaders, warehouse managers can all benefit from understanding of lean
1. Supply chain, logistics leaders, warehouse managers can all
benefit from understanding of lean
What started on the assembly floors of manufacturing industries has now spread to the logistics and
warehousing industry, where supply chain management leaders are using the operational strategy to
drive up quality of service, productivity, employee satisfaction and efficiency.Â
To ensure all members of these industries have a strong understanding of the methodology and the
wherewithal to implement such a system in their own facilities, the nonprofit Lean Enterprise
Institute (LEI) has put together a hands-on workshop that will discuss the best practices when it
comes to adopting lean operations into the distribution, warehouse, logistics and supply chain
environment.Â
The group will host two workshops in Florence, Kentucky, where participants will have the chance to
learn about the system in the classroom, then try it out first hand
How it works
The first workshop will focus on applying lean operations to logistics and supply chain processes in a
win that benefits every person and player involved in the journey of a product.Â
This segment will cover the best ways to derive the total costs of developing a fulfillment strategy
that is based on meeting customer expectations, and then determining how to lower them. This can
be achieved regardless of where any hiccups are found in the supply chain. Value-stream mapping
also provides huge opportunities for lowering costs in line with a lean agenda, which the group will
spend plenty of time covering, in addition to improving lead times and inventory.Â
Finally, the first workshop will end with a demonstration of how warehouse managers can create
new operational systems that focus on customer and supplier measurements, and how to drive more
visibility in the supply chain.Â

Implementing lean
2. The second workshop will focus on implementing lean operations, taking an incremental approach to
how warehouse and distribution center managers can best adopt the practice. The group says it will
prepare participants so that they can spot areas where lean could improve an operation, implement
these strategies, then take a measurement of how well the solution improved the warehouse
function.
When it comes to applying lean strategies to the logistics sector, the most important techniques
include lean storage, operational diagramming, visual management and workload planning.
Participants will learn how to divide work assignments in the most efficient way to ensure a just-i-
-time operation.Â
The workshop will also focus on maintaining standardization for all processes during warehouse
operation.Â
The training session is one of many that are going on around the country as demand for lean skills
soars. According to the Society for Human Resources Management, companies are increasingly
looking for applicants who are well versed in lean skills and how to implement the strategy, even
more so than the popular Six Sigma process improvement strategy.
