Most elderly people do not really consider they might fall, especially when choosing a new TeleCare or TeleHealth installation, so the VitalBase Fall Detector watch will give them continuous protection from the unexpected dangerous fall. The VITALBASE fall detector is indeed vital to the health and well-being of the elderly telecare user. TeleCare Market The European population over 75 years old is around 35 million people and 99% of them wish to stay at home Further 85 years old, the fall risk is over 50% over a calendar year! In France, 12 000 deaths/year are due to a fall… In Europe, fall-related injuries are reported to be the fifth most common cause of death in the elderly population and the most likely cause of accidental death. As people grow older they are increasingly at risk of falling and injuring themselves, often leading to unconsciousness or awkward positions in which they are unable to activate a manual trigger themselves. To lie undiscovered for hours after a fall often leads to more serious complications and increased risk of premature death. Our solution is today deployed in a large scale throughout Europe by all Telecare operators. Compatible with main Telecare home units.   3. 3. 200 000 EN 5034-2 1st users in Europe THE MOST DEPLOYED SOLUTION IN EUROPE A RELIABLE AND REASSURING SOLUTION THE MOST INNOVATE AUTOMATIC CALL European standard automatic fall detection on the market Description VitalBaseFALL is an automatic fall detector based on a microcontroller, a 3-axis accelerometer, a vibrator and a radio transmitter; allowing easily integration into an existing Telecare product range. Significantly low power consumption was also realised along with the high reliability of fall detection. In common with standard manual pendants or wrist fobs used to call for assistance - in the case of distress or illness - the VitalBaseFALL watch also has a manual button. The major problem with relying on a manual emergency call is that the user must be conscious and still able to press the alarm button; this is not always the case after a serious fall. The VitalBaseFALL answers this problem; it detects the fall and automatically calls for help. A radio signal is transmitted to the home care phone which in turn is connected (either by telephone, Internet or GSM etc.) to an emergency call response centre. The fall detection concept The design objectives are two-fold: detecting falls that lead to unconsciousness and to promote the continuous security of the user. Although a waist or neck pendant is an easy place to detect falls it is the least likely to provide protection at the critical moments of washing, dressing and night time wandering. So by locating the sensor on the wrist both the aesthetic and practical considerations are all resolved. How does it work? STEP 1 STEP 2 VitalBase FALL Detector In case of heavy fall, an abnormal activity is detected / (Heavy/dangerous fall) At the end of the countdown, the alarm signal is triggered. (Immobility / Fall detected) The alert is sent to the transmitter …which immediately warns the call centre….. which also warns the emergency persons previously selected by the wearer After a fall, the wearer can cancel the alarm by making a large movement of the arm. Following a fall, the fall detector algorithm takes between 10-20 seconds to determine the fall event the time taken by the algorithm depends on many variables including previous activity, fall hardness, height etc. The unit will then vibrate for 20-30 seconds to alert the user that a fall event has been detected, if no activity (arm movement) is detected during this warning period a fall alarm will be generated and the red LED lights up to confirm the generation of the alarm.Therefore following a fall, a period of inactivity of 30-40 seconds is needed for an alarm to be generated. Features In it standard configuration, the TD VitalBase Receiver VBR2 is configured to use the proprietary TD RF Protocol and a simple ASCII host protocol. Other custom protocols can be implemented on demand.
