  9. 9. LUNDI 28 AVRIL 2014 / MONDAY APRIL 28, 2014 • ABAKA • 9 ABAKAE N G L I S H S E C T I O N MONDAY APRIL 28, 2014 Kessab on the chessboard of international politics BY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN On March 21, the occupation of the Armenian town of Kessab in Syria, by Al Nusra terrorists was simply another episode for the world media watchers. But for the 2,000 Armenian residents of the town who were evacuated to Latakia, 50 kilometers south of Kessab, it was a repeat performance of the Armenian Genocide, which had started 99 years ago. Turkish leaders are frustrated that the first genocide could not fully accomplish its goal, allowing survivors to scatter around the world and tell their stories and thus give a black eye to Turkey, which is striving to prove to the world its democratic and human rights credentials. One expression of the Turkish frus- tration is the two-decade-long block- ade of Armenia, aiming for the latter’s extinction. To complement its genocidal poli- cy, Turkey has been using the war in neighboring Syria to settle scores with the Armenians, within its broader poli- cy of serving Israel’s regional ambi- tions. The attack on Kessab is nothing less than genocidal. The mercenaries hired, trained and fed by Turkey are modern-day barbarians whose atroci- ties equal those perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks and Nazis against Armenians and Jews. Of all the American media personal- ities, the most conservative, Glen Beck, was so outraged that he shout- ed, “We are backing cannibals!” The Armenian news media provided the detailed coverage of Kessab aggression, but except some sparse information provided by the BBC in London, Liberation in France and Russian TV RT, there was a unani- mous blockade of news about Kessab; an organized silence which is tanta- mount to a blatant collusion with the criminals. No one needs to be a high govern- ment official or a news analyst to fig- ure out that the occupation of Kessab by terrorists was organized by Turkey, despite Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s denial that the news was manufactured by “evil-mind- ed” media people. Consider this: without Turkey’s cooperation and direct involvement, a group of mercenaries, perched on American tanks and armed with anti- aircraft rockets could not freely cross the border to invade the town of Kessab while a Turkish air force plane shot down a Syrian Mig-34, which had been trying to block the invasion. “It looks like Turkey has deliberate- ly brought down that Mig-34,” said a NATO source to Al-Monitor. “We doubt that there was any threat to Turkey. It looks like Turkey took down this Syrian jet to help the radical groups.” While Turkish leaders were in blan- ket denial mode, a leak uncovered the entire plot. On March 27, 2014, Information Clearinghouse reported that access to YouTube had been cut off in Turkey after an explosive leak of audiotapes that appeared to show min- isters talking about provoking military intervention in Syria, using the protec- tion of the Tomb of Soleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, as a pretext. This is very much in line with the modus operandi of the Turkish state, which created similar incidents in 1955 by dispatching a terrorist to Salonika, Greece, to plant a bomb at Ataturk House, to provoke the September 6 atrocities against Armenians, Greeks and Jews in Istanbul. Of course, no one can match Turkish cynicism, when the Turkish Foreign Ministry is offering to provide loving care to 2,000 Armenians, whom it had dislodged from their homes dat- ing back 500 years. Indeed, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has released a com- muniqué which says, in part, “The Turkish Foreign Ministry had notified the relevant UN bodies that ‘Syrian Armenians residing in Kessab region could be admitted in Turkey too and protection could be provided to them.’ Also, the representatives of the Armenian community were informed of the matter through official chan- nels.” The Kessab attack was a disaster waiting to happen and certain factors coincided and conspired in its making; the corruption-riddled Erdogan’s image needed a revamp, especially during the municipal elections in Turkey — to make or break the Islamic party’s future — that domestic bravado certainly paid off handsomely when the Turkish raid on Kessab was accompanied by the shooting down of the Syrian jet, under trumped-up charges that it had violated Turkish airspace. Another factor was that for Davutoglu, this attack served as a reminder that Turkey was still capable of committing genocide with impunity, thus blunting the impact of the centen- nial. Turkey’s relations have been improving with Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s apolo- gy to Erdogan and a package deal worked out between Turkey and Israel to compensate the victims of the Mavi Cont’d on page 10 Emotional Massachusetts State House Program Remembers Genocide, Boston Marathon Bombings, Governor Patrick Pays Tribute to Armenian-Americans By Alin K. Gregorian Mirror-Spectator Staff BOSTON — A large contingent of Armenian-Americans and their supporters gathered at the State House’s Great Chamber to mark the 99th commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. The program was noted by poignant remembrances of the Boston Marathon bombings, which had forced the cancellation of last year’s commemoration, the attacks on the town of Kessab in Syria, as well as the recent death of a fixture in the community, Very Rev. Raphael Andonian. Participating in the program was outgoing Massachusetts governor, Deval Patrick, who entered the chamber to thunderous applause and a standing ova- tion. “There is no better governor that we have had in the Commonwealth,” said House Speaker Robert DeLeo (D- Winthrop) in his introduction, as a visibly touched Patrick addressed those assembled. “I wanted to offer an official gubernatorial welcome to the Armenian community,” he said. “I am struck by how poignant it is” to attend the commemoration program in his last year as gover- nor, he added. “You welcomed me as a candi- date nine years ago. It was a moment in the campaign where my human rights [credentials] were called into question,” he said. “I was overwhelmed by the experience and the attacks on who I was and what I was.” He recalled that when he came to the commemoration as a candidate nine years ago, he received a warm welcome from the Armenian community and that reenergized him. “I wanted to come and thank you. You made our Commonwealth a better place and I am here to say that you have made this man a better man,” he said. He praised the members of the Armenian community for their efforts toward funding and completing the Armenian Heritage Park in Boston, a first-of-its-kind private and public col- laboration, the designer of which, Donald Tellalian, received the joint House and Senate Resolution. State Sen. William Brownsberger (D-Belmont) introduced honoree Tellalian and praised him for coming up with the concept and design of the park and working for years on the project as a volunteer. “Each part [of the abstract sculpture and pool] symbolizes the immigrant experience,” he added. He said the park was a “beautiful public space and a generous gift” to the state by the Armenian people. The humble Tellalian thanked everyone. “I really am most honored. This 12- year effort began as a mere possibility,” he said. It came about, he said, “as a result of extraordinary collaborations” between the Armenian Heritage Park Foundation, the professional team assembled and city and state bodies. In addition to those named above, he thanked specifically the Rowes Wharf and North End communities for “their unwavering support.” Cont’d on page 10
  10. 10. That got me thinking Our phones, our lives Last week, I forgot to take my phone when I left home for school. I remembered before getting on the bus, and I panicked for a few seconds. I was already late, there was no time for me to go back home and take it. I would have to go a whole day without texting my best friends, who go to different schools. I would have to go a whole day without being able to reach my friends and ask them ‘’where are you?’’ on my way to the cafete- ria. I would have to borrow someone’s phone to call my mom at the end of the day to tell her that I’m on my way to the metro. This is terrible, I thought, it’s going to be such a weird day! That’s when I wondered: When did I become so addicted to my cell phone? Whether I realized it or not, my phone had an integral role in my day. How come? When did things become this way? I check my phone every so often even when I’m doing my homework. I use my phone as a watch, since I don’t have a watch. I use my phone to write down notes that I want to remember (even though I never check them afterwards, I’m more of a Post-it kind of gal). The problem is, there is no way to go back to a time where cell phones did not control the world. We have reached a point where things only start getting more and more technological and there is no way to stop it. Recently, I’ve come to realize that instead of fighting it and feeling threa- tened by it, we should just hop on the ride and go along. You know what they say, if you can’t beat them, join them. You might find that a certain device is useless; and a lot of them are. However, sometimes, you just have to go along with it. That’s the way the world runs now. All this to say that I find myself rejecting new things at first because I don’t like the sound of it, or because the fact that it’s a new technology puts me off. Although we should be as careful as we can to avoid being completely controlled by our devices, I think that a negative feeling towards them is not always necessary. Sananne Wartabetian Montreal 10 • ABAKA • LUNDI 28 AVRIL 2014 / MONDAY APRIL 28, 2014 THE YOUTH CORNER Emotional Massachusetts State House... Cont’d from page 9 The park came about, he noted, as a result of language introduced by Peter Koutoujian into the Big Dig project. Koutoujian, who in turn introduced the keynote speaker, spoke first about the Boston Marathon Bombing last year, which saw him in the thick of the action in Watertown. He also got choked up as he paid tribute to Andonian, calling him “an amazing friend to our community, always smiling and always willing to join with us.” A moment of silence was observed for Andonian. He praised Geragos for his legal victories in the courts against insurance com- panies that sold policies in the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide, resulting in winning a total of $37.5 million. Now, he said, Geragos is suing the government of Turkey itself. Geragos started off by joking, “You guys are the original Glendale.” He added, “The Armenian Heritage Park speaks volumes to that. It is just amazing.” He then spoke about the importance of having the US government and the president affirm and acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. He said once they pass resolutions, his job of litigating and seeking justice is that much easier. Armenians, he said, need to focus on the “three ‘R’s, recognition, restitution and reparation.” The Turkish government, he said, “fears reparations. Why do you think they pay retired legislators to work against [recognition]?” He encouraged more Armenians to get involved with politics so as to get the community’s concerns addressed. State Rep. Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown), opened the program. “Every year, for nearly three decades the State Legislature has convened this event to honor the survivors of the Armenian Genocide,” he said. “We are here to celebrate the resilient spirit of the Armenian people.” Hecht paid tribute to the late speaker of the house, George Keverian, under whose watch the annual State House Armenian Genocide Commemoration had started. He praised DeLeo for his unwavering support in his introduction, and lauded him “as a person and as a leader.” DeLeo was one of the many who recalled the events of one year ago, which had caused a lockdown of the city and the cancellation of the commemoration. As for the Armenian Genocide, he said, “We will never forget the 1.5 million Armenians killed. We will carry on their legacy by ensuring the world does not forget.” He added that he was proud to support the resolution that Massachusetts Rep. James McGovern (D-Worcester) had proposed, condemning the attacks in Kessab, Syria. DeLeo paid tribute to the Armenian community for its contributions to vari- ous sectors, including the construction of the Armenian Heritage Park. “We have to consider the gratitude we owe the Armenian community. We have to make sure that the human spirit outshines epic infamy.” Special applause was also reserved for a group of high school students from Wilmington, Mass., who have studied the Armenian Genocide, writing essays and even a symphony on the subject. Many other human rights organizations and three consuls were present for the commemoration, but thunderous applause and a standing ovation was reserved for four survivors of the Rwandan Genocide. Three survivors of the Genocide were present, but many more were repre- sented by the Stand Up for Your Survivor posters, a program initiated by Anahis Kechejian, a freshman at Northeastern. Photos by Jirair Hovsepian Kessab on the... Cont’d from page 9 Marmara incident. Thus, the ground has been paved for reviving hegemon- ic prospects in the Middle East through a three-way cooperation between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel. On the international scene, the US had two main reasons to prod Turkey into action. The first was driven by domestic considerations to placate the hawks at home who were clamoring for Washington to set up a no-fly zone in Syria to help the advance of terror- ists against the Damascus regime. For a reluctant Obama administration, the Turkish incursion into Syrian airspace was an effective substitute to a no-fly zone, which could involve putting US personnel in harm’s way. The second reason was of a more global nature. Despite all the rhetoric, the Crimean crisis has been a diplo- matic defeat for Washington, requiring a powerful response to Russian advances in the world’s troubled regions. Therefore, Syria’s main ally, Moscow, had to sustain a defeat to compensate for its gain in Crimea. Western and Turkish surrogates suc- ceeded in their drive to occupy Kessab on the Mediterranean, despite the presence of the Russian fleet next door in Tartous. As far as Al-Nusra and Ahrar Al- Sham Al-Qaeda terrorists are con- cerned, they needed a victory after a series of defeats at the hands of the Syrian Army and Hezballah volunteers. Kessab being the closest region to Assad’s power base on the Mediterranean was considered a strategic prize. The looting, beheadings and burn- ing down of churches are continuing in the area, therefore no one with a straight face can claim that these Turkish surrogates are there to bring peace and democracy to Syria. The reaction of Armenians has been weak and inadequate, primarily because a miniscule country in the Caucasus and a dispersed and disorga- nized diaspora are no match for the powers behind the war in Syria and the consequent attack on Kessab. In the first place, the Armenian gov- ernment has reacted very cautiously by sending a parliamentary delegation in an unofficial capacity. The news media in Armenia was caught off guard because of its endemic intro- verted nature and because of its gener- al ignorance about basic facts on Diaspora Armenians. Many journalists there just found out where Kessab was and why it was important to Armenians. The relief effort is underway to help the refugees huddled in Latakia, and Catholicos Aram I of the Great See of Cilicia has been able to mobilize all segments of the Armenian community in the region. No similar coordination seems to be in the works in the western coun- tries, where challenges and opportuni- ties are great in rallying support for Kessab Armenians. It is just and prop- er to decry Turkey’s sinister actions but those alone do not help the victims nor do they steer the West into a dif- ferent course in Syria. Appeals and let- ters of protest are necessary elements to sensitize the world public opinion, but they would be more effective if the entire community mobilized as one when approaching this outrageous tragedy. Armenians have been demonstrat- ing in front of the Turkish embassy and consular offices in Paris and Los Angeles, respectively, but that move- ment has to be amplified to drown out the unified message from all Turkish legations around the world. All of a sudden, a historic Armenian region has appeared on the chess- board of world politics and we have yet to wake up and get organized for a proper response. With the flux of polit- ical tides, all Armenians the world over need to coordinate for contin- gency plans with the government of Armenia to be able to face similar calamities which are bound to happen again in that volatile region. On Monday evening 14th of April, the adversary yet again violated the ceasefire and fired shots in the direction of Armenia’s border villages. Armenian acting defense minister’s press secre- tary Artsrun Hovhannisyan told the aforesaid to News.am. He noted that the shooting continued till late at night, but the situation is now calm on the border, and the Armenian side has no casualties or injuries. Hovhannisyan added that the Armenian side opened fire in response and silenced the adversary. Azerbaijan opens fire on Armenian villages
