  12. Conclusion Metadata from the entire HDF4 archive could be read using a single tool (HDF4Mapper) because the entire archive is in a single format (HDF4). Roughly half of the archive includes conventional use metadata (StructMetadata.N) that allows it to be plotted / mapped with conventional tools. January 8-10, 2014 ESIP Winter 2014 12

Editor's Notes

  1. Three types of metadata: discovery, use, and understanding… These same three types are included in the HDF-EOS and netCDF convention.
  2. The ESDIS EarthData wiki describes 78 tools for working with ESDIS data that are available from the DAACs.
  3. Five types of tools are available.
  4. Three of these types depend on structural (use) metadata in the files. If the use metadata are conventional, code that accesses these data needs to be written only once. If the data granules do not have conventional use metadata, custom code must be developed, tested, and maintained.
  5. Draft UML class diagram for the HDF-EOS grid conventions. The conventions cover only minimal required information for grids.
  6. Draft UML class diagram for the HDF-EOS grid conventions with focus on grid properties.
  7. Draft UML class diagram for the HDF-EOS swath conventions. These are necessarily more complex than the grid conventions because they include DimensionMaps and GeoFields
  8. Roughly 50% of the granules and 76% of the data sets had conventional use metadata.
