  2. 2. Our ancestry is our authenticity. At Manitobah, we aim to make the world’s most comfortable, authentic traditional footwear. To achieve this, we manufacture our products in Canada, where Aboriginal footwear has been made for thousands of years. Keeping production close to our ancestral home allows us to remain authentic. And, of course, a made-in-Canada label expresses our support for ethical working conditions, fair wage labour and time-tested quality.
  3. 3. Our StoryOur story begins in Canada thousands of years ago, when our ancestors created the mukluks and moccasins you see in these pages. Throughout history, Aboriginal nations useddistinctive leather, furs and beadwork to reflect their individual customs and culture. Today as Métis we continue this tradition by combining the craftsmanship and artistry of our ancestors with modern materials and techniques to create truly timeless footwear – as functional as it is beautiful. Stitch by stitch, bead by bead, we tell the story of our People. All of our products are made in Canada.
  4. 4. Manitobah History S titch by stitch, be Throughout history, Canada’s First Peoples wore mukluks and moccasins as they thrived in harmony with nature. As European settlers arrived, they too adopted our traditional footwear as a necessary tool for survival. we tell the story of o 1870 1630 Manitoba becomes a province of Canada; Métis artisans supply handmade goods for emerging markets. The North American fur trade leads to the birth of a new people – the Métis. 1990 1630 - 1870 Métis siblings Sean and Heather McCormick establish a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 10. 10. Our Sole When it came time to develop footwear for the city, we challenged Vibram®, the world leader in high-performance rubber soles, to design a sole that could withstand the effects of cold and high-abrasion urban environments (min. 150 NBS). Vibram® used 70 years of history and a rugged TC1 compound to provide a durable, low-profile sole that could also serve as a canvas for an Aboriginal story. Together we build quality and tradition in every step.10

  31. 31. Louie Gong Louie Gong (Nooksack) was raised by his grandparents in Ruskin B.C. and the Nooksack tribal community. As a small child living in a home with no running water, he would help his Chinese grandpa collect buckets of drinking water from a nearby spring and then help his Native grandma (Nooksack, Squamish) make bannock on their Coleman camp stove. Although these early experiences lie in stark contrast with his astonishing success, Louie would tell you that they guide his decisions as an educator, nationally recognized mixed race activist, and founder of Eighth Generation -- where he merges influences from his mixed heritage and urban environment to design his highly sought-after, hand-drawn custom shoes. eighthgeneration.comImages and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, CanadaA colour image of this artifact can be found at: www.manitobah.ca/artifacts 31

  66. 66. Community As our business grows, so too does our support for our community. For years we have worked with the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD), an Aboriginal non-profit organization that touches on all aspects of Aboriginal community life. Each year we partner with CAHRD to provide an education bursary that allows Aboriginal students to attend college or university. Together with CAHRD, our hope is to bring self-determination to all Aboriginal people through improved literacy skills and training for new career paths, including working with us.
