  3. 3. Automated External Defibrillators “AED” <ul><li>Computerized device for use in cardiac medical emergencies </li></ul><ul><li>Used in combination with CPR may increase a victim’s chance of survival </li></ul><ul><li>Units at BCPS will not shock a person with a functional heartbeat </li></ul>
  4. 4. BCPS Trained Personnel in Each School: <ul><li>School Nurses </li></ul><ul><li>Certified Health Assistants </li></ul><ul><li>CPR / First Aid Back-up </li></ul><ul><li>Certified Athletic Trainers </li></ul><ul><li>Coaches </li></ul>
  5. 5. American Heart Association’s Chain of Survival <ul><li>Early Access / Call 911 </li></ul><ul><li>Early CPR </li></ul><ul><li>Early Defibrillation / AED </li></ul><ul><li>Early Advanced Care </li></ul><ul><li>The AED must be used </li></ul><ul><li>as part of the chain! </li></ul>

All Employees Can Help in An Emergency <ul><li>Activate your school’s Medical Emergency Plan </li></ul><ul><li>Immediately notify the school nurse or other CPR trained employee </li></ul><ul><li>Clear all staff and students from the area </li></ul><ul><li>Identify a staff member to meet EMS at the door of your school </li></ul>

Location of AEDs <ul><li>Location of AED(s) at our school </li></ul><ul><li>In cabinets – alarm will sound when door is open </li></ul><ul><li>Grab the handle of the unit – all supplies are attached to the unit </li></ul><ul><li>AEDs are for school grounds use only – not to be sent on field trips, to sports events, etc </li></ul>
  8. 8. Good Samaritan Law <ul><li>Law that encourages individuals to voluntarily help an injured or suddenly ill person. </li></ul><ul><li>CPR / AED skills can assist you to help someone during a medical emergency </li></ul>
