Compound Characters Compound characters are characters that are made up of more than one part. Here are two examples of how some basic characters make up compound characters. 父 + 巴 = 爸 女 + 子 = 好
Making new words Now that you have learnt quite a few characters, you can start putting them together to make new words. I'll give you some examples. 火 + 车 = 火车 train 火 + 山 = 火山 volcano 中 + 国 = 中国 China 明 + 天 = 明天 tomorrow
Making new phrases The next step is to take the new words, add another character and make a new phrase. A phrase is part of a sentence. Here are some examples. 上网 to go online 山羊 mountain goat/sheep 好天 good day 小鱼 small fish 中国人 Chinese person
More Phrases NOTE: 上 means above, and it also means 'to go up.' 下 means below, and it also means 'to go down.' 上山 to go up a mountain 下山 to go/come down a mountain
Making sentences 小马上山 The little horse goes up the mountain 小羊下山 The little goat comes down the mountain 大马上小山 The big horse goes up the small mountain
The answer If you said ' The small cat comes/goes down the big mountain. ' then you'd be right!
Translating Translate the sentences on the next slide. You will need one extra word - 有 = have/has Eg: 中国 有 大猫。 China has big cats.
