The simple reference letter (einfaches Arbeitszeugnis,
Arbeitszeignis) – only details when the employee start and quit
the job incl. short list of tasks (usually you got such reference
after short internship).
Note: the employer is obligated by the German law to issue a
detailed reference letter!
The detailed reference letter ( qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis) –
must have employee data, job description, performance
assessment and an overall review on the employee’s character
and work ethics.

6. ‘Hidden codes’ in the recommendations
The detailed reference letter is the one that comes loaded
with codes that you have to know how to uncode.
Most employers ensure they don’t write anything negative on
your reference letter, they tend to use codes instead.
For example
„Er erzielte nicht unerhebliche Verkaufserfolge“ (he achieved
considerable success in sales - actually mean you weren’t
such a good sales person).
,Er erledigte seine Arbeiten mit großer Sorgfalt und
Genauigkeit‘, (He did his work with great care and accuracy)
that means the employee was slow in his/her work
„sehr zur Verbesserung des Betriebsklimas beigetragen“
(Greatly contributed to improvement of the working
atmosphere) could mean the employee is an alcoholic

2. Read carefully your Curriculum. Try to explain with your
own words what you do and how (you can use a mirror to
check your gestures and mimics:)

4. Search in the Internet the website of the company (your
potential employer) to learn more about its activity and
business.
Check all your docs (CV, references, diplomas,
certificates, etc)
