FONT The font used on this magazine front cover is very large and bold, a sans serif font is used to allow the audience to see the text easily, the masthead of the magazine is very large which again makes it easily visible and eye catching. The headline of the magazine “Shutter Island” has a distressing font similarly used in the movie poster, this creates a masculine feel and appeals to the target audience well. Other text on the cover also carries out the same text style, the cover lines such as “Greatest movie art ever” shows this to tie in with theme of the magazine. The tagline “Inside Marty’s Madhouse!” suggest psychologically unstable characters which appeals to the target audience, the font is also is sans serif font which helps it stand out too.

COLOURS The colours red and white are used the most on the front cover, red signifies blood and danger which is conventional of the psychological thriller genre, white also signifies purity and innocence which is not so conventional but is used to contrast the dark colours for the text to become more visible to the audience and stand out. These colours are conventional as they are typically used in movie posters and film magazine front covers, they are also conventional of the psychologically thriller as they signify themes which tie in with the genre, themes such as mystery.

IMAGES The main image has Leonardo DiCaprio with a gun in his hand in a masculine posture, this appeals to the target audience as it is conventional of the psychological thriller genre, the gun signifies danger, the mist also shows that there is mystery in the film which also appeals to the target audience as it is very conventional. The island in the background is very dark due to the low lighting which suggests darkness and mystery within the island, this is also very conventional and is also on the movie poster so it appeals to the target audience. The way Leo is shown is that his character is very determined, this shows his character being strong which is a conventional protagonist. This image is very conventional of film magazine covers as its fill the whole cover and stands out well to the audience as it is eye catching.
  5. 5. LAYOUT The layout of the magazine cover is very conventional as it is professional and simple, the masthead is placed at the top of the page which is very typical of movie magazines. The cover lines are placed on the sides and the top and bottom which is also conventional, this leaves space for the large visibly eye catching image in the middle which is the route of the eye. The layout is conventional for the psychological thriller genre and it emphasises the elements which appeal to the target audience such as the distress font and the main image of the protagonist.
