  1. 1. A VISIT TO KERALA APPLICATION BASED EVALUATION
  2. 2. INSTRUCTION Imagine you are travelling to Kerala in August You will need a map of India to begin this activity. Show Kerala on the map of India.
  3. 3. WHICH OF THESE SCENES WILL YOU SEE THERE? Which states do you think the other two sceneries are from? Point out these states on the map of India. Discuss the need or relevance of each mode of transport that you see in each region.
  4. 4. WHICH OF THESE KINDS OF TREES WILL YOU FIND THERE? In which states will you find the trees shown in the other two photographs? Point out these states on the map.. Point out the differences between the trees in the different regions and explain why they are different.
  5. 5. WHICH OF THESE HOUSES WILL YOU SEE THERE? In which states will you find the other houses? Locate these states. Can you identify some of the material that the houses are made of? Could there be a reason for using certain kinds of material in certain regions?
  6. 6. WHICH OF THESE KINDS OF TRADITIONAL DRESSES WILL YOU SEE THERE?
  7. 7. WHICH OF THESE CROPS WILL YOU FIND THERE IN PLENTY? In which states are the other crops grown ? Point out these states. Can you name the crops?
  8. 8. WHICH OF THESE KINDS OF TRADITIONAL FOOD ITEMS WILL YOU EAT THERE? What are the names of these traditional food items? What are they made of?
  9. 9. WHICH OF THESE KINDS OF FESTIVALS WILL YOU SEE BEING CELEBRATED THERE? In which other states will you find the other forms of dance? Can you locate them on the map of India? Are these dances connected to any particular festival? Name the festivals the dances are connected to.

  11. 11. WHAT KINDS OF TRADITIONAL CRAFT ITEMS WILL YOU FIND THERE? What material do you think they are made of?

EXTENDED ACTIVITY : PLAN YOUR VISIT TO KERALA Plan your journey: - From which station to which station will you travel? - What will be the distance between these two stations? - How much time will it take to travel? - Which train will you choose and why? - What will be the cost of your train ticket? - What route will your train take from your town/city? - Which states will you cross on the way? - Which are the major stations that you will cross? You need the railway time table for your reference
  13. 13. EXTENDED ACTIVITY : PRESENTATION A. Find out about another state with reference to the following: - climate - trees - crops - food - dress - crafts - any other interesting detail B. Learn a song, a dance, a few sentences in the local language, a food preparation and a folk tale from that sate C. Present your findings This activity can be done in groups. Each group does research on a different state and present s the findings. Students could refer to books and the internet or interact with people for their research.
