  2. 2. Where do they live? <ul><li>They live in Siberia (Russia) of Asia. They live in -50 degrees . </li></ul>
  3. 3. How do they live? <ul><li>They live in clans governing by a chief. </li></ul>The Khanty are semi-nomadic, as are most herding peoples. T he Khanty have moved around with their reindeer

  5. 5. <ul><li>How is the society organized? </li></ul><ul><li>The Khanty are a native minority of Siberia that join the autonomy under the okrug (autonomus law). </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>What do they eat? </li></ul><ul><li>They hunt fish and meat in the taiga. </li></ul><ul><li>Also they have livestock of reindeer </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>In do they belive? </li></ul><ul><li>They are orthodox christian with traditional rites. </li></ul><ul><li>They have a shamans </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>What problem do they face? </li></ul><ul><li>The Khanty were persecuted under the Soviet regime in the 1930s </li></ul><ul><li>Oil exploitation on Khanty land is polluting their forests and sacred lakes, killing the reindeer and scaring off other game. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>The oil companies often move in without consulting the Khanty, or trick them with false promises of compensation. </li></ul><ul><li>They are reduced to living in ‘National Villages’ away from their ancestral hunting grounds </li></ul>
