Lesson 14 Passchendaele Challenge

Year 9 Social Studies <ul><li>Friday 14 th March 2008 </li></ul><ul><li>Do Now: (write answers in full sentences) </li></ul><ul><li>Must </li></ul><ul><li>What was “ANZAC soup?” </li></ul><ul><li>Should </li></ul><ul><li>State a reason why Robyn Malcom (the lady in the video) thought we should remember the soldiers who fought at Passchendaele. </li></ul><ul><li>Could </li></ul><ul><li>State a reason why the people of Belgium want to remember the soldiers who fought in WWI at Passchendaele. </li></ul>
  2. 2. Learning Intention: Students will be able to honour the life of “Uncle George, age 23, who died at Passchendaele in 1917.
  3. 3. Task: Today you are going to work in your group to make something to honour the life of Uncle George. We will take photos of what you have created and send them to Robyn Malcolm so that her and her family know that their Uncle George is not forgotten even outside of their family. SO MAKE IT GOOD
  4. 4. <ul><li>Task: </li></ul><ul><li>Each group is going to make 2 things (work in 3’s within your group) </li></ul><ul><li>What could we make? </li></ul><ul><li>A poem (doesn’t have to rhyme) </li></ul><ul><li>A drawing </li></ul><ul><li>A short story </li></ul><ul><li>A short news article </li></ul><ul><li>A model of some kind </li></ul><ul><li>A short comic strip </li></ul><ul><li>Remember this is to honour Uncle George. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>What to include: </li></ul><ul><li>Think about the conditions the soldiers fought in. </li></ul><ul><li>Think what it must have been like to die in a foreign country. </li></ul><ul><li>Think what it must have been like to not say good-bye to your family. </li></ul><ul><li>Think about why we have learnt about Uncle George. </li></ul><ul><li>Think about what these soldiers did for Belgium, New Zealand, Britain and the world. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Task: You have 15 mins to make your creation before your groups present them back to the class. Remember this is to honour Uncle George. Remember this is someone’s family remember – let’s make Uncle George our family remember – he could be our Uncle to remember and thank for giving his life for the people of Belgium.
