Jet Set

  1. 1. Jet Set
  2. 2. What is the “Jet Set”?"Jet set" is a term that was used to describe aninternational social group of wealthy people, organizingand participating all around the world in social activitiesthat are unreachable to ordinary people. The term, whichcomes from the early 1950s, came from the lifestyle oftraveling from one stylish or exotic place to another via jetaircraft.
  3. 3. Jet AirlinerWhen jet passenger service firstbegan in the 1950s tickets were soexpensive that it became known asa form of travel for the rich. The original members of thiselite, free-wheeling sect werethose "socialites" who were notshy about publicity and entertainedin semi-public places likerestaurants and in nightclubs, where the "paparazzi" – a jetset phenomenon – photographedthem. They were the firstgeneration that might weekend inParis or fly to Rome just for a party.
  4. 4. Flight Attendant Flight attendants or cabin crew (also known as stewardesses) are members of an aircrew employed by airlines primarily to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers aboard airliners. In the 1960s and 1970s, many airlines began advertising the attractiveness and friendliness of their stewardesses. National Airlines began a "Fly Me"; campaign using attractive stewardesses with taglines such as "Im Lorraine. Fly me to Orlando."
  5. 5. Private JetA private jet is a a jet aircraft, usuallyof smaller size, designed fortransporting groups of up to 19business people or wealthyindividuals. The term “private”implies that the jet is owned by oneof the people who fly on it, ratherthan a large airline corporation. Mostprivate jets are actually faster thanthe larger airliners, and they oftenhave a longer range.
  6. 6. Dressing SharpThe style of dress for Jet-setters in theearly 1960s was much more formalthan the way people dress today.Cufflinks, a thin necktie, and a pocketsquare are features of this style that areless often worn today. In general, bothmen and women took much greatercare in their appearance when travelingin public.
  7. 7. Little black dress A little black dress is an evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often quite short. Fashion historians ascribe the origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel, intended to be long- lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color. A woman wearing a little black dress can be attractive while still maintaining a classy appearance.
  8. 8. What do you think?• What do you think of people who travel halfway across the planet just to go to a party?• If you had more money than you could spend, how would you live your life?• Do you think people today dress as well as they did in the past? Why or why not?
  9. 9. IbizaIbiza is an island in theMediterranean Sea 79 km offthe coast of the city of Valenciain Spain. The island is well known for itssummer club parties whichattract large numbers oftourists. Ibiza is considered apopular touristdestination, especially due to itslegendary and at times riotousnightlife centred around twoareas: Ibiza Town, the islandscapital on the southern shoreand Sant Antoni to the West.
  10. 10. Monaco Monaco officially the Principality of Monaco (French: Principauté de Monaco; Monégasque: Principatu de Múnegu; Italian: Principato di Monaco; Occitan: Principat de Mónegue), is a sovereign city state on the French Riviera. Monaco boasts the worlds highest GDP nominal per capita at $151,630. Monaco also has the worlds highest life expectancy at almost 90 years.
  11. 11. Private IslandA private island is adisconnected body ofland wholly owned bya single private citizenor corporation.Although thisexclusivity gives theowner substantialcontrol over theproperty, they still fallwithin the jurisdictionof national andsometimes localgovernments.
  12. 12. Gambling A common leisure activity for wealthy people during the golden age of jet travel was high-stakes gambling. The ultra- rich often won and loss tens of thousands of dollars a night at stylish casinos such as those in Monaco. Favorite games of the jet set were roulette and baccarat.
  13. 13. Sports CarsSports cars are a way that manyjet-setters choose to spend theirmoney. While less-expensive carscan often go as fast as a Porche orLamborghini, it is often asimportant for some people to beseen in a sports car as it is toactually drive one.
  14. 14. Polo Polo is a sport often associated with a luxury lifestyle. This sport is played by two teams of four players on horseback who try to hit a small ball into the other team’s net using long wooden mallets. It is very much like soccer (football) only played by men riding on horses. Because of how expensive it is to maintain a polo horse, this is a sport that is mostly just for rich people.
  15. 15. What do you think?• Is it a good idea to gamble more if you have all the money you need? What do you think of people that bet $10,000 in a single night?• Would you like to have your own private island? What would you do there?• Are sport cars a good way to spend your money? Why or why not?
