Conservation Roundtable Presentation October 25, 2010 - The Balanced Growth Alliance

  1. 1. The Balanced Growth Alliance Of Fauquier County An Overview History, Objectives, Accomplishments And Future Planning Presented to The Conservation Roundtable October 25, 2010 www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
  2. 2. Overview of the BGA • We began meeting in late winter, 2008 • A volunteer driven organization • A mix of local business professionals with a keen interest in balanced economic growth • To date, thousands of hours of volunteer time invested in learning, planning and doing • Launched based on two fundamental observations… www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
  3. 3. Observation #1: “Silos” • Independent economic development efforts County-wide, multiple-groups (2 Chambers, SFBOA, Partnership, Marshall Business Group) • Very similar goals and interests (smart growth) • Silos not communicating or sharing vision, resources or results with each other • Broad consensus on most economic development issues www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
  4. 4. Observation #2: Vision and Planning…Or Lack Thereof • Elected Officials: Consensus not present relative to vision • No defined, agreed and implemented plan for economic growth: – What do we want in Fauquier County? – Where do we want to put it? • How will we thoughtfully and methodically develop our Service Districts? www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
  5. 5. Conclusion If we do nothing, or cannot formulate and implement a robust, well communicated plan for Service District-focused growth, the end result is predictable… We are surrounded by sprawl…are we next in line? www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
  6. 6. BGA Mission To sustain Fauquier's essential character by advocating actions that promote economic opportunity in harmony with productive farm lands, connected neighborhoods, scenic beauty, and responsible resource management. “…without trashing the place!” www.balancedgrowthalliance.org
