TESCO’S BACKGROUND NOTE<br />Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen (Cohen) in 1919 using his bonus from his World War I army service.<br />The first Tesco store was opened in 1929 in Edward, London, and the first supermarket was opened in 1956 in Malden, Essex. <br />Tesco&apos;s image took a beating when Imperial Tobacco Company which was considering to acquire Tesco, did not go in for the deal as it felt that the acquisition might damage Imperial&apos;s image.<br />Moreover, Tesco&apos;s stores were themselves small and ill-equipped .<br />To meet these changes in customer demand, Tesco closed down many of its stores to concentrate on larger stores with better facilities... <br />14-Nov-08<br />TESCO CSR APROACH<br />4<br />

CSR – THE TESCO WAY <br />The company was ranked 1st in the category of Food and Drug retailers and was placed among the most socially responsible companies in the UK.<br />Tesco considered CSR to be an integral part of its corporate framework and its CSR was spread across several internal and external activities, which included local regeneration projects, being environmentally conscious, and community issues. <br />Tesco&apos;s CSR strategy was &quot;to earn the trust of their customers by acting responsibly in the communities where they operate, by maximizing the benefits they bring and working to minimize any negative impacts.&quot;<br />14-Nov-08<br />TESCO CSR APROACH<br />7<br />

ENERGY , WATER & FUEL<br /><ul><li>Tesco launched its energy awareness campaign in 1996.</li></ul> The company&apos;s staff was expected to take active part in it. <br />Tesco reduced the energy consumption per square foot by 35% between 1997 and 2005, and planned to reduce it further by 5% by 2006 .<br />14-Nov-08<br />TESCO CSR APROACH<br />11<br />

SOLUTION<br />Tesco has chosen the Association for the Help of Mentally Handicapped People as the partner for its largest charity project – Tesco Charity of the Year 2005. <br />Tesco arranged for a public financial collection in 33 Tesco stores with 23,26,751 collected during the six month period of the project´s duration. <br />14-Nov-08<br />TESCO CSR APROACH<br />14<br />

Tesco in &apos;Computers for Schools&apos; <br />Tesco is launching a new PR drive to promote its Computers for Schools 2008 voucher collection scheme.<br />The campaign is to be managed by Resonate PR who will work with the Tesco CSR team to promote the scheme, which is now in its seventeenth year and launches in March.<br />Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Tesco, Debra Stones, said, “It has been enormously successful but its longevity means that we need to keep it fresh which is why we wanted to review our PR approach.”<br />14-Nov-08<br />TESCO CSR APROACH<br />15<br />
