  22. Nature of IDs for Research • Balance in some features • Global vs. Local • Global: Unified service • Local: Specialized service • Authorized vs. Open • Authorized: Trusted, restricted • Open: no restrictions • Charged vs. Free • Multiple IDs can co-exist in a single category • How to mange multiple IDs • Integration/mapping/associating/discovering • Control/Manage/Authorize • Private/Share/Open
  23. Summary • Researchers should live with a lot of IDs anyhow. • It’s a daily life of them. • Then, how can we help them? • It is our mission!

Editor's Notes

  1. So, we have a large amount of scholarly metadata.   Basically, we think the global sharing of metadata is critical. It is not a threat but an opportunity to make the metadata open.   Technically speaking, it’s not so difficult. But the ownership of these metadata is shared by NII and associated institutions and organization. We have to get permission to make the metadata open from them. Also, the biggest challenge for us is how to clarify the licensing conditions. We have just started on reviewing the conditions to make our metadata open to the public.   On the other hand, collaboration with OCLC is really important for Japanese academic libraries as well as NII. We’d like to build a mutually beneficial relationship with OCLC. So I want to continue the exchange of information between you and us on sharing scholarly metadata.
