2. NOTCH Studio
Dedicated to cultural exchange and collaboration between Nordic countries and China in Design, Architecture, Art and
Music.
NOTCH Festival has taken place in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou since 2006, introducing many Nordic designers,
architects, artists and musicians to China.
Partnered with 2007 Get It Louder, 2008 Shanghai eARTS Festival, 2009 ICOGRADA, 2009 - 2011 Beijing Design Week,
2010 EXPO Nordic Pavilions.
3. • NOTCH 2011 context
• Takes place in Dashilar area, south of
Tiananmen Square, historically cultural area in
Beijing, now a mix of traditional residential
hutongs and street shops on the outskirt.
• Introducing Nordic social design and action
to awaken and activate the creative energy in
Dashilar.
4. • NOTCH 2011 theme - FEEDBACK
• FEEDBACK output from (or information about the result
of) an event or phenomenon in the past will influence an
occurrence or occurrences of the same event / phenomenon
in the present or future.
• Participants to upcycle the social resources found in Dashilar
to create valuable works that can feedback to the local
society.
• FEEDBACK echoes 2011 Beijing Design Week’s theme
“Design with Good Will”
• FEEDBACK is the sequel of previous NOTCH’s theme ID-
ENTITY and RE:PUBLIC, based on the history of NOTCH
itself for the future.
5. • NOTCH 2011 venue
• Relay Factory in the heart of the Dashilar area.
• A relay is an electrically operated switch. It fits NOTCH/FEEDBACK
context perfectly.
• The word “notch” means certain kind of switch.
• Relay contains feedback loops inside.

7. • Mid August - Mid September:
Research in Dashilar, collect
photos and source materials
• Invite local photographers, architects, designers, douban
activists and the public to participate.
• Discover hidden gem in Dashilar, record via photos,
video, collect samples, materials for Open Studio Camp.
• Upload to sina weibo and douban.com, online voting and
reward.
8. • Sep. 17 - 23: Open Studio Camp
• Nordic participants research Dashilar area, recycle local
materials, re-design to feedback to the local society.
• Local designers, creative people, volunteers to
participate and collaborate.

SOCIAL LIBRARY + SOCIAL READING CHAIRS
• Concept:
• Introduce the friendly, mobile and open design to enrich cultural life in
Dashilar area.
• Introduce the concept of social library, the books are donated from the
local individuals and shared with the local community.

URBAN FARM
• Concept:
• Upcycle (creatively recycle), green community.
• Recycle the used milk boxes collected in Dashilar to create 3D pixel cow
installation on the rooftop of the relay factory.

• Hvass & Hannibal: Danish female graphic designer duo. http://www.hvasshannibal.dk/
• Been: Chinese female graphic designer. http://www.carrot-design.com/
• Hvass & Hannibal and Been met in 2008 when Been co-organized Hvass &
Hannibal’s mini exhibition at NOTCH. Been helped organize Hvass & Hannibal’s
lecture at CAFA (Beijing) in 2010. “Urban Farm” will be their first collaborative
project.

VOLCANO ASH FACADE PAINTING
• Concept:
• Upcylce (creatively recycle), public art, community action.
• Icelandic artist work with community volunteers to paint recycled objects with
volcano ash and make facade installation, to reflect the global macro climate
change’s impact to the local micro climate change.
• Iceland has long tradition of utilizing volcano ash in construction of road, bridge
and house.
• A meaningful interaction on environment subject between the 2 countries.

• Participated exhibition at 2010 Shanghai EXPO Iceland Pavilion.
• Use the nature (volcano, glacier etc.) as inspiration, works exhibited at galleries in
New York, Berlin and Copenhagen etc.

• Upcycle (creatively recycle), community action.
• Lithuanian textile designers work with Chinese textile designer and volunteers to
use leftover cloth collected in Dashilar to make installation.

TEXTILE WORKSHOP
• Project leaders: Baltos Kandys (LT) + DaiDai (CN)
• Baltos Kandys, Lithuanian female textile designer group http://
www.baltoskandys.com/en/ extended textile design to 3D objects, won award
from the Ministry of Culture.
• DaiDai, female textile designer from Beijing, studied at Central St. Martin College
of Art and Design in London.

• Concept:
• Maker culture via upcycling (creatively recycle): DIY, open source,
mashup.
• Connect Copenhagen Creator Culture with Beijing Creator Culture, to
co-produce the DIY synthesizer, Dynamic lighting installation and painting
robot.

• Finnish media artist collaborates with Chinese designer to use recycled light tubes to
create an interactive lighting installation version of Tic Tac Toe.
• Invite young people from the community to play.

• Concept:
• Upcycle (creatively recycle), community action.
• Collective work, contributed by all participants, Dashilar in your eys, decode the “creative gene” in
Dashilar, awaken the creative energy of the society.
• Source from old shops, social clubs, old theaters, historical sites, traditional cultures etc.
• Interact with audience, encourage the audience to make their own discovery trip and feedback to
the map.
