  12. 12. Elisabet Ney Museum The Elisabet Ney Museum is the former studio of the German-born sculptor, Elisabet Ney. Called For- 1892 mosa by Ney, she had the studio built in 1892 after she was com- missioned to sculpt statues of Ste- phen F. Austin and Sam Houston Tower Plan for the Chicago World’s Fair. The original building was a one-story castle-like Neoclassical limestone structure situated on 2.45 acres of land in Austin’s first suburb, Hyde Park. Archival evidence suggests First Floor Planthat Ney was the lead designer of the original structure and thelater addition. Agents of the developers of Hyde Park Monroe M.Shipe and Conrad H. Liebold were likely contractors of Formosa.Formosa originally consisted of a basement for storage, a studioabove it with a 16-foot ceiling, a small reception room and a sundeck with a balustrade on the roof. The south entrance has asmall portico, which served as a carriage porch. The north eleva-tion features a large window-entrance at a low level for deliveryof blocks of stone. Additions to the building in 1902 rendered thestudio more of a home. These included an enlarged basement, two larger rooms and a porch on the east elevation, and the de- Second Floor Planfining feature of Formosa, a tower with a room on the third level.Apart from being her studio and Austin home, Formosa servedas a social gathering place for friends and famous visitors, it wasdescribed as the “chief center of culture in the city.” Ney chosethe location of Hyde Park for its open prairies and “unspoiledbeauty of nature.” She was one of the first to purchase landin the new subdivision and chose a secluded lot along WallerCreek, which she subsequently damned and called it Lake Ney.The City Council ordered the dam to be removed in 1898. Following Ney’s death in 1907, a friend who later willed the Basement Planbuilding to the newly formed Texas Fine Arts Association purchasedFormosa. The Elisabet Ney Museum was established in 1911 to hon-or the memory of the artist and was the first Art museum in Texas.M. Kelley Russell Fall 2009 Tahinee M.
