11.30am
Part I: Business Skills for HR – Complementing Your HR Expertise with Influential Business
Partnering Competency
HR leaders often face the challenge of connecting their work to real business outcomes and garnering the attention of business
unit executives. Lack of business acumen is a key roadblock to their greater strategic positioning. They are required to have an
understanding of how a particular business makes money, as well as have a grasp of the key challenges and priorities the business is
facing.
This module is designed to help you understand the language of business and provide the “know-how” to support key business drivers
and align human capital to meet evolving business needs.
Module Outline:
• Understand the Business – HR Linkage from a C-suite Perspective
• Decipher business strategy and how it relates to organisation capabilities and core competencies as well as how those
connect to pivotal talent and organisation design decisions
• Evaluate your organisation’s financial anchors (margin and velocity, and the resulting returns) and the shifting nature of the
game (the company’s positioning, business model, external context, competitor’s positions and set of targeted customers)
• Value chain thinking in your business: Where you are in the value chain, strategic sourcing and procurement, business
process and logistics, supplier management and partnering?
• Examine all your HR processes and potential investments to understand your HR priorities and make investment decisions
like other lines of business functions

FINANCE
PART I: HUMAN CAPITAL FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN HR AND FINANCE
Most CEOs express how important it is for HR professionals to have a thorough understanding of budgets, financial statements, Profit
and Loss (P&L) and productivity metrics – that define the health of an organisation. If HR professionals want to move up the ladder
and assume a senior management role, an understanding of the numbers is essential to grasping the drivers of financial success and
how HR can impact the bottom line.
This module will incorporate and stress the practical application of finance tools to real-life HR issues, without sacrificing the theoretical
rigor that will enable you to better apply what you learn in a variety of situations.
Module Outline:
• Understanding the income statement, balance sheet and cash flows
• The difference between turnover, cash and profit

Workforce Issues to The Board?

people contribute value, and how they can invest in programs such as training to optimise that value. However, HR lacks insightful
metrics, tools and analysis to quantify human capital value and achieve data driven decision making for the workforce.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR HR: HOW TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS ACUMEN & HR CASE
STUDIES COME ALIVE?
There are many project management tools and methodologies available in the market. Each of these methodologies is made to target
a specific audience (e.g. Engineers, Six Sigma and others), but they all boil down to the following:
1.	A phase in the beginning where you detect, recognise, observe and/or describe the problem or project to be introduced (often
associated with a definition of teams, targets and timelines)
2. A research phase where evidence and facts are found to continue to make the baseline business case to solve the problem
3. A suggested solution to solve the problem
4. A plan for the implementation of the solution
5. The actual implementation of the solution
6. A follow-up phase to ensure that the implementation is working
In this session, you will be tasked with starting to solve one substantial business and one HR issue inside your company.
