IntroductionA geographic information system (GIS), or geographicalinformation system captures, stores, analyzes, manages,and presents data that is linked to location.This work is the fruit of a field trip in Cibodas NationalPark. In this presentation, we will show the use andmanipulation of a free open source GIS/remote sensingsoftware ILWIS (Integrated Land and Water InformationSystem). 2

  6. 6. Data acquisitionThe data are recordednot only with the GPSbut also in a sheet ofpaper to make therecord easier. Thispaper contains manyinformation such as thelocation name, a globaldescription of the place,GPS coordinates, codenumber of photosaround the location,the elevation, the dateand time, the weather,the land use and landcover, the history of thelocation, the facilitiesavailable in the area, 6and some remarks.
  7. 7. Data acquisitionTo get a more accuratedata, we wait until weget a good signal. Inaddition, we try tominimize the EstimatedPosition Error (EPE) toless than 10 meters.Lesser EPE meanshigher accuracy for thedata acquisition. 7
  8. 8. Download of data The next step is to download the data from the GPS to the computer. For that, we use DNR Garmin software.GPS not connected yet GPS connected 8

  11. 11. Download of data Same as the waypoint, the track also are downloaded. We choose Shapefile format as type of the data. For the track, we have to define the output shape. We will choose LINE. The file is finally saved in the computer. 11
  12. 12. Download of dataBefore leaving DNR- Garmin, we closethe port first. Thisone means that weend the connectionbetween the GPSand the computer(software). 12
  13. 13. Map: scanned mapThe data that we got was in jpg format.ILWIS can not read this kind of format, sowe have to convert it to another format(TIF or TIFF) that ILWIS can read. To doso, we can use Windows feature or aspecific software.Here, I use Adobe Photoshop. Open thefile with the software and save as TIFFformat. 13

Start ILWIS ILWIS for Windows is a Windows-based, integrated GIS and Remote Sensing application consisting of:  Display of raster and multiple vector maps in map windows  Display of tables in table windows  Interactive retrieval of attribute information  Image processing facilities  Manipulation of maps in a Map Calculator  Manipulation of tables in a Table Calculator  GIS analysis tools, … To launch the Ilwis software, just double click the ILWIS icon. The ILWIS logo appears, followed by the ILWIS main window. 14

  33. 33. Point map ( TTG and Cibodas point) TTG and Cibodas point data are from GPS. For these kinds of data, we import the data instead of creating a new map, like a point map for example. 33

  44. 44. Digitizing: polygon map (check segment) Before polygonization, we check first the segments whether1 there are:  Self overlap  Dead ends  Intersections 2 For that, we have to edit the layer (1) and then check the segments (2). 44

  77. 77. Conclusion ILWIS Open Source is user-friendly, and it has powerful GIS analysis tools and modules. However, it still has some problems. One of the major problems of ILWIS is that the software is not really stable, and even crashes at a certain time. 77
