What is CAD-CAM…
CAD-CAM refers to use of computer software's
to both Design a product and programme
manufacturing processes.
This technology first adopted in Automotive
industries and now a days it is used in all the
sectors like Textile, Aerospace, Medical
industries, Die manufacturing and welding
and cutting industries.
Importance of CAD-CAM in Industries.
• CAD- Model helps us ensure that the product we are making is actually possible to be
made with our process.
• We can ensure failure analysis and also we can optimize.
• CAM- simulates the actual manufacturing process and helps to make a few decisions
regarding tools, tool wear, etc.
• In complex systems like satellite systems subjected to many forces which we can’t test
physically.
• Some forces we can see acting on the object in simulation, and we can change
accordingly in the design.
• So it saves calculation time and gives near to perfect results.
Benefits of CAD-CAM Package
• In any new product design and development process we can not produce complete
design in 1 step.
• It’s a continuous process, No of iterations are needed.
• No of design changes will be made at any stage, ie. at design stage, analysis stage and
at manufacturing stage.
During design stage Cost would be ‘X’
During Analysis stage Cost would be ‘X+ΔX’
During process planning Cost would be ‘X+ΔX+ ΔX’
During Production stage Cost would be ‘X+ΔX+ ΔX+ ΔX’

design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of designer and improve the
quality of design.

A) Geometric Construction
• Cartesian and polar coordinates
• Absolute and incremental dimensions
• Units
• Grid and Snap
B) 2D Analytical features
Points, Lines, Arcs, Circles, and Splines
C) 3D wireframe modelling features
3D lines, 3D faces, Ruled surfaces, Rotational sweep

should be able to generate various types of sculptured surfaces such as Bezier,
Curves, B – splines

Editing or manipulating the existing models at any stage of the product design is possible

3. Display Control Features
To provide a user friendly interface with effective visual characteristics, following
display control features are given in software package.

Window to identify a set of entities for editing functions
Zoom to change the scale of display of the object
Pan to move the object on screen without changing the scale
Hidden to remove the hidden lines or surfaces for viewing the geometry
Animation to display the number of images in sequence to imitate the actual
motion
Shading to show the 3D view of the image on screen complete and shade as it
appears on the image

4. Drafting Features
 It have used different dimension types such as linear, angular, radius, circular, baseline
and limit dimensions etc.,
 In the features, sectioning to get a better visualization of the model or object.

5. Programming Features
 Programming facility allows the user to program specifically for an aplication
 Programs help the user to input the least amount of information for any required
design.
6. Analysis Features
In modelling features, the package should have many analysis features and facilities
such as,
 Calculation of area
 Calculation of volume
 Calculation of mass
 Calculation of moment of inertia
 Calculation of Centre of gravity
In FEA, the developed model is converted into finite element mesh and all the required
data are calculated for analysis.

Scaling: Transformation used to change, increase or
decrease the size of an object without alter the shape.
Rotation: the movement of an object in such a way that
the distance between a certain fixed point and any given point
of that body.
Translation: moving an object across the screen from one
position to another position.
Editing: changes the properties of a specific object by
the editing commands of package.
Drawing Features in CAD
Labelling: it should be labelled for better documentation
and reference.
Pan: moves the drawing display along the direction
of the mouse swipe.
Redraw: refreshes the display in the current viewport.
Regenerate: regenerates the entire drawing from the current
view port.

Dimensioning: provides the dimension of the selected entity.
