How Did Englishmen Cheat Indians on English Education?

By insisting on the grammar-intensive Oxford and Cambridge method on Indians, without ensuring that Indians can speak English, English educationalists guaranteed that Indians never prosper in their language. How did this happened? What is the logic behind this?

  1. 1. How did Englishmen Cheat Indians On English Education? And, How do Indians Happily Allow the Suffering to Continue?

Methods of Ancient England In ancient England, Latin was taught by means of what has been called the Classical Method: focus on grammatical rules, memorization of vocabulary and of various declensions and conjugations, translation of texts, doing written exercise. What was the logic behind adopting such a methodology? Languages were not being taught primarily to learn oral communication. Languages were taught to learn for the sake of being "scholarly" or, for gaining a reading proficiency in a foreign language.

They speak English at home. By the time they reach school-age, they are already in a position to ‘manage’ English. What they need from school is the training to use ‘correct, structured English’. Therefore, Oxford, Cambridge methods are heavy on grammar from the day one! They create ‘Grammar Scholars’ because they need not (or are not meant to) develop ‘Oral Communication skills’.

Unlike British, English is not our mother tongue. We don’t speak English at home. According to cognitive educational psychology, ‘Meaningful Speaking’ must be the first step in learning any new language. It is because by speaking, we gain confidence, start loving the language, and get ready to learn grammar rules. (As we learned our mother tongue) However, over emphasis on ‘repulsive’ English grammar at the very early age, the brutal ways in which the teachers enforced the grammar/vocabulary mugging-up, and no emphasis on speaking lessons, make us ‘Non- talking, Purposeless, Grammar Scholars’!
  5. 5. How Do Indians Suffer? Wherever there is a grammar-intensive examination, Spelling bee competition, Indians emerge victorious. Wherever there is an examination, where new ideas are to be generated, articulated and delivered on the spot, most Indians fail. For example, in competency tests like IELTS/GRE/TOEFL etc, & in Interviews. In listening test, candidates neither catch up with the recording nor understand the accent. They miss points, can’t grasp the underlying ideas of dialogues, don’t understand the questions, write answers with the wrong grammar. In reading test, candidates get lost in the reading matter. They fail to understand where to look for answers as they miss the connection and relationships. In writing test, candidates fail to write with coherence, cohesion, right vocabulary and sentence structure. They search for words to build relationships and logically divide the idea into paragraphs. In speaking test, candidates fail to understand the real meaning of the question quickly. They fail to formulate answers based on cue-cards. They fail to form right responses with variety of grammar rules. Teachers are aware of this. However, they enjoy following the failed methods. Why?
  6. 6. Why the Failed Methods are Still So Popular? Classical Method does virtually nothing to enhance a student’s communicative ability in the language. It is remembered with distaste by thousands of school learners, for whom foreign language learning meant a tedious experience of memorizing endless lists of unusable grammar rules and vocabulary and attempting to produce perfect translations of stilted or literary prose (Richards and Rodgers 1986:4). Then, why is it so popular? It is convenient (and no risk) to think that the best way to learn English is the way the native English people do. It requires few specialized skills / little efforts on the part of teachers. Any unemployed can teach English! Test of grammar rules and of translations are easy to construct and can be objectively scored. Even a computer or illiterate person can evaluate MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) tests. Many standardized tests of English still do not attempt to tap into communicative abilities, so students have little motivations to go beyond grammar analogies, translations, and rote exercise. The English skills acquired through this method is enough to acquire mediocre skills in Engineering / science areas, where Indians try to focus. Rote-learning in many other areas of education is encouraged. Therefore, nobody finds faults with the tedious experience of memorising endless list of unusable grammar and vocabulary lists. In a society where the student’s career success doesn't depend on his ability to convince, debate, argue, or motivate, his/her English skills are judged only through the ‘grades’ in grammar tests!
