  5. 5. We are now living in a period where at least one scientist theorizes an event known as “the singularity” will occur in 2050, less than 50 years from now. The singularity is an event where the speed of technological advancement will be so fast and far reaching that human existence will be irreversibly altered, we will combine our brain power with computer power in order to think, reason and communicate <br />(Kurzweil, 2006)<br />

  9. 9. Touching</li></li></ul><li>Mental disorders associated with developmental disorders among children are on the rise (Randerson, 2007) .<br /><ul><li>Autism rates have increased by 15 fold since 1991 from one in every 2,500 to one in every 166 children (Seitler, 2010)
  10. 10. Diagnosis of hyperkinetic disorder at the age of five nearly tripled between 1992 and 1999 and tourette syndrome has more than doubled between the 1990 and 1995 period (Randerson, 2007)

Bipolar disorder is also on the rise in our children.</li></li></ul><li>Abnormal responses to sensory stimulation have been noted by many clinical observers (Davis, et al, 2006; Gilberg, Coleman, 2000)<br />Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is quite common with children with Autism; with reports suggesting that between 42% and 88% experience SPD (Baranek, 2002; Pfeifer, Koenig, Kinnealey, Sheppard, Henderson, 2011)<br />Toddlers with ASD show less awareness of sensations than typically developing children; this can be due to high rates of sensory avoidance or an attempt to with draw from the environment due to sensory overload (Ben-Sasson, Et al, 2008; Wiggins, Robbins, Bakeman, Adamson, 2009).<br />At birth the brain of an autistic child is normal in size, however, by the time these children reach 2 to 3 years of age, their brains are much larger than normal (Nash, et al, 2002).<br />

MIGRAINES ARE ANOTHER SENSORY STIMULI AILMENT ON THE RISE<br />The Mayo Clinic lists as one of the primary causes for migraines with aura bright lights, sun glare and loud sounds unusual smells, including pleasant scents, such as perfume, and unpleasant odors, such as paint thinner and secondhand smoke (Migraine: Causes, 2009)<br />Study shows that people aged 20-50 years are more prone to migraines now than in the mid 1990s (Linde, Stover, Zwart, Hagen, 2011)<br />

Conclusioncontinued<br />Comprehensive studies should be conducted to examine a possible connection between technology and its effects on our brain developments.<br />Research to understand the effects of high speed travel, fluorescent lights, video games, and other sensory stimulation technologies and the manner in which our brains process that constant bombardment of information <br />The need to understand the affects that technology is having on our brains is imperative if we wish to continue to develop new technology and survive at the same time. <br />
