Measuring Email Campaign
Results with Google Analytics

Introduction
• Email marketing professionals need to
constantly monitor campaigns performance in
order to measure results and refine their
activities to achieve their targeted goals.
• Analytics can track everything from user
interaction, engagement and conversion rate
among other attributes.
• There are several tools that are available for
measuring email campaign results including
Google Analytics.
Google Analytics
• Anyone with a Google Analytics account already
has the ability to measure their
html email marketing campaigns.
• Once you login to your account, the next step is
to obtain a tracking code by creating a new
property.
• The tracking code is used to measure user
engagement from the campaigns and its
parameters are appended to the URLs in the
email content.
Campaign Parameters
• These parameters help you to keep track of the
visitors who click on the links in the emails they
receive from your campaign.
– 1. Campaign Source (utm_source): this can be simply a label to
help you quickly identify the email marketing product you are
using.
– 2. Campaign Medium (utm_medium): this is the campaign
instrument being used such as email.
– 3. Campaign Name (utm_campaign): this is the name of your
campaign. This value is important for helping you differentiate
between different campaigns or messages within a campaign.

A sample URL with the tagging information will
look like this:

page=home&utm_source=StreamSend&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=My

View Results
• In order to keep track of your results, simply log into your
Google Analytics account and click on Traffic Sources or
Campaigns in the dashboard.
• You will be presented with a summary of your top traffic
sources and you can alternatively click on View Full
Report in order to see all your sources of traffic.
• There is a lot of data that is provided such as the
average session duration, bounce rate and many others.
• You can now use this data to measure and compare the
performance of all your email marketing campaigns.
