CASE STUDY
RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL
SRI DASMESH ACADEMY ANANDPUR SAHIB, PUNJAB
LOCATION:
The Academy is located at Anandpur
Sahib just 4KM away from the famous
Gurudwara Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib.
It is well connected by rail and road
and is 80 Kms from Chandigarh
towards Nangal Dam.
Sri Dasmesh Academy is a higher secondary school affiliated to
C.B.S.E. Established in 1980, Sri Dasmesh Academy, Anandpur Sahib
owes its origin to the vision and initiative of the Punjab Government and
the members of the Punjab Defence & Security Relief Fund Committee. They
proposed to set up a Public School in the idyllic setting so as to afford best possible
educational facilities to the children of Punjab coming from different backgrounds
and cross sections with an accent on providing these facilities to the rural population
and those belonging to the Armed Forces,Para Military and Police Forces.
CLIMATE:
It is tropical , semi arid, hot and subtropical monsoon type with a hot
summer and a bracing cold winter.
TEMPRATURE:
The temperature ranges from minimum of 4° C in winter to 45° C in
summer. The average annual rainfall in district is 775.6 mm.
TOPOGRAPHY :
Gradual slope of 5-6m which has well incorporated in the design of
the school especially through landscaping

• The entire site has been laid out as an eclectic
mix of formal and informal areas to encourage
different learning styles.

all the building blocks are placed in irregular geometry, every
block has its own dignity and own form having mostly rectangular
and squared form
• BLOCK PLANNING - internal courtyards which form a part of a blocking of a school
provide sufficient light and ventilation to the rooms . Each dormitory opens up in to the
corridor facing the central court instead of an enclosed space there by giving as homely
feeling.
• SPATIAL ORGANISATION – all the blocks are integrated with the site through
landscape features and well connected to each other through pathways and courtyards
ORIENTATION AND FORM:
ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER:
The school has been designed with the building resolved in to a senses of courtyards on an intimate
human scale giving a sense of security to the children. There is a special continuity of the classrooms
to the courts and veranda. Open spaces all around and between the built forms form an integral part of
the outdoor learning activities and environment as a whole.

auditorium which promotes the social interaction
more.
Ther corridors are semiopen which promotes the
indoor and outdoor relation
A bold expression of cubist asthetic of chandhigad
set sensitivity into hillside location
Amphithetre at entrance gives warm welcoming feel
while entering.
Courtyard planing provided with semi-open corridors
promotes interactive spaces.
MATERIAL PALLETE:
-Largely built up from locally available material stone.

pollution free environment., which enhance the living and learning environment in the
school.
-All the paths lined with shrubs and trees thus heeling the soften the look -enhance the
landscape through added artificial features like aero plane , ship etc.
-shaded pergola with planters in the corridor roof of blocks are covered with greenery.
-blend of hard and soft landscape .

  • 3. LOCATION: The Academy is located at Anandpur Sahib just 4KM away from the famous Gurudwara Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib. It is well connected by rail and road and is 80 Kms from Chandigarh towards Nangal Dam. Sri Dasmesh Academy is a higher secondary school affiliated to C.B.S.E. Established in 1980, Sri Dasmesh Academy, Anandpur Sahib owes its origin to the vision and initiative of the Punjab Government and the members of the Punjab Defence & Security Relief Fund Committee. They proposed to set up a Public School in the idyllic setting so as to afford best possible educational facilities to the children of Punjab coming from different backgrounds and cross sections with an accent on providing these facilities to the rural population and those belonging to the Armed Forces,Para Military and Police Forces.
  • 4. CLIMATE: It is tropical , semi arid, hot and subtropical monsoon type with a hot summer and a bracing cold winter. TEMPRATURE: The temperature ranges from minimum of 4° C in winter to 45° C in summer. The average annual rainfall in district is 775.6 mm. TOPOGRAPHY : Gradual slope of 5-6m which has well incorporated in the design of the school especially through landscaping

SITE ZONING: • The entire site has been laid out as an eclectic mix of formal and informal areas to encourage different learning styles. • free form is followed , no rhythm between zoning • All buildings are placed in a staggered manner according to levels. Academic/admin. Block – colonnaded corridor are joined two blocks The faculty residences are in close proximity to the hostels Service blocks are clustered at the rear side of the site Sports facilities – outskirts of the site to reduce the noise and disturbances Hostel block - 3 no. Located parallel to the outer edge of the site Water body and green area act as a buffer zone Site is accessed by 6M wide road

NORTH ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK: Reception, visitors lounge , offices , conference room ACADEMIC BLOCKS: Consists classrooms , labs, teachers room , toilets , student's lounge , library , open air theatre etc. RESIDENTIAL ZONE: HOSTEL BLOCKS --Separate blocks for girls and boys with proper security FACULTY HOUSING SERVICE ZONE: DINING BLOCK – ( KASTURI) – services, dining hall , kitchen, canteen STUDENT CENTRE -- Gymnasium, table tennis, swimming pool , tuck shop SERVICE AREA – Water tower , electric substation, etc. RECREATIONAL ZONE: athletic track , football field , cricket stadium , gymnasium, hockey fields ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK ACADEMIC BLOCKS RESIDENTIAL ZONE SERVICE ZONE RECREATIONAL ZONE ACADEMIC BLOCK -2% RESIDENTIAL -4% RECREATIONAL -30% SUPPORTING FACILITIES -1.3% OPEN SPACES -63.6%

  • 9. all the building blocks are placed in irregular geometry, every block has its own dignity and own form having mostly rectangular and squared form • BLOCK PLANNING - internal courtyards which form a part of a blocking of a school provide sufficient light and ventilation to the rooms . Each dormitory opens up in to the corridor facing the central court instead of an enclosed space there by giving as homely feeling. • SPATIAL ORGANISATION – all the blocks are integrated with the site through landscape features and well connected to each other through pathways and courtyards ORIENTATION AND FORM:
  • 10. ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER: The school has been designed with the building resolved in to a senses of courtyards on an intimate human scale giving a sense of security to the children. There is a special continuity of the classrooms to the courts and veranda. Open spaces all around and between the built forms form an integral part of the outdoor learning activities and environment as a whole. Natural contours have been used as an inherent part of landscape. consent bond between enclosed , semi enclosed , open to sky spaces i.e. added to the richness of spatial character.. Ther corridors are semiopen which promotes the indoor and outdoor relation A bold expression of cubist asthetic of chandhigad set sensitivity into hillside location Amphithetre at entrance gives warm welcoming feel while entering. Courtyard planing provided with semi-open corridors promotes interactive spaces.

LANDSCAPE: -The extensive and luxurious landscaping merges beautifully with the surrounding. -all this add to a quite , serene and pollution free environment., which enhance the living and learning environment in the school. -All the paths lined with shrubs and trees thus heeling the soften the look -enhance the landscape through added artificial features like aero plane , ship etc. -shaded pergola with planters in the corridor roof of blocks are covered with greenery. -blend of hard and soft landscape .
