21CL Hong Kong 2014 Workshop - Description: In 2013-14 KIS introduced 'One to World', a 1:1 iPad program that adopted as it's motto: 'creative, inspire, redefine'. This presentation summarises key observations and findings from the consultation and design aspects of One to World, through to it's implementation. The focus will then shift to examining how One to World has impacted student learning for our Grade 3 and 4 students participating in One to World, and how it is recasting the role of the teacher.

  21. 21. Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK • approximately one third of our teachers purchased an iPad…and we were ready to support this with appropriate professional development opportunities.

  23. 23. Why: We believe in providing personalised, authentic and challenging learning opportunities for students. 26. 26. Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK Turning the tide following this inauspicious start, edtech: 1. developed a very detailed plan and strategy document. We developed a version specifically for parents. 2. focussed on vision for learning 3. took every opportunity to consult with parents, and distributed copies of our vision statement and proposal for One to World.
  27. 27. Turning the tide 4. We delivered a 6 week training course for parents so that they could experience our vision first hand. 5. we demonstrated the value and actively and aggressively promoted it. 6. we built a cohort of teachers and rallied under the One to World name and philosophy. 38. 38. learning management system Lesson 8 Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK
  39. 39. • A Learning Management system is the ‘glue’ that binds a 1:1 program • Productivity/efficiency gains. • Parental participation • Publishing and networking platform. • A place to teach and learn digital citizenship skills.
  40. 40. Lesson 9 Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK storage & charging
  41. 41. • Startup rule: students must keep their primary charging device at school • however…at KIS, our charge stations are now mostly empty. • Don’t over-invest. Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK
  42. 42. Elegance is sometimes over-rated… iPads come to school charged. These solutions become less important with time
  43. 43. lessons Lesson 10 Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK about one to world.
  44. 44. • Keep iPads out of the cupboards and off the charge • Encourage creativity by defining the learning according to outcomes, rather than products. • Allow students to choose how to express their thinking and creativity Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK
  45. 45. • Allow the organic growth of student technology coaching in classrooms. It doesn’t need a name. • Publishing is powerful and sharing is empowering. • Connect with learning and learners beyond classroom/school boundaries. Follow us on Twitter: #kispd 21C Conference : #21CLHK

Editor's Notes

  • Games (at school)
The adoption of 1:World learning brings with it the implementation of Mobile Device Management (MDM). All behaviours can be monitored while at school, and Apps can and will be blocked, including games. KIS takes responsibility for the use of iPads through strong management procedures and policies.
    iPad addiction at home
Communicate with your child’s teacher about work that is being done. Follow your child’s class via Edmodo/Schoology, and/or class Twitter account
Homework times should not change too much. How much homework was your child doing prior to the iPad? It should not change too much. If it is, maybe there is a distraction...
Be familiar with how your child uses their iPad. Share usernames and passwords for all accounts. Take charge and share the device.
Have an open space (or Homework area) in your home where your child will use their iPad for homework. Make learning and use of the iPad visible in the home.
Set time limits and restrictions. A balanced lifestyle at home with technology in the mix has to be managed.
Creating structures that are followed with consistency leads to improved outcomes
    Distractions
The adoption of 1:World learning brings “with it the implementation of Mobile Device Management (MDM). All behaviours can be monitored while at school, and Apps can and will be blocked, including games. KIS takes responsibility for the use of iPads through strong management procedures and policies.
My child is too young to handle this responsibility
Children need to be taught how to take responsibility for their possessions.
Paper is still better than electronic
We support a policy of paper reduction, however this will be a process of gradual change, one that we have been participating in for a number of years.
We support choice regarding textbooks, but in the future some of this choice is likely to be taken away from KIS as more textbook publishers shift to richer and multimedia forms of textbooks that paper cannot provide.
Concerns about replacing teachers with iPads
The iPad is a “game changer”, but it relies on a skilled teacher.
Teachers will participate in ongoing professional development to move from Substitution to Redefinition (SAMR).
The role of the teacher in a technology rich environment does however modify from preparing teaching opportunities, to preparing learning opportunities, where the feedback received helps to inform future planning. ”
