  2. 2. Hula sticks Kala’au <ul><li>One stick was small </li></ul><ul><li>Small stick was three feet small and heavy </li></ul><ul><li>Dancer held one against his arm </li></ul><ul><li>Second stick is ten feet long </li></ul>
  3. 3. Footboards Papa Hehi <ul><li>Dancer stamped his foot on stone or board </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes dancer used a special board </li></ul><ul><li>Put a flat board onto another small board </li></ul><ul><li>Stepped on the top on one of the boards and tipped it back and forth </li></ul>
  4. 4. Little Stones ‘Ili’ili <ul><li>Dancers used small rocks, round stones </li></ul><ul><li>Had two stones and held them between their fingers </li></ul><ul><li>Made clear and sharp noises </li></ul><ul><li>Moving water made them smooth </li></ul>
  5. 5. Bamboo Pipes ‘Ohe Ka’eke’eke <ul><li>Hawaiians use bamboo pipes sometimes </li></ul><ul><li>The bamboo pipes were pieces that are different lengths </li></ul><ul><li>The pipes were cut </li></ul><ul><li>One end was closed and one side was open </li></ul>
  6. 6. Bamboo Rattle Pu’ili <ul><li>Dancers often used this instrument </li></ul><ul><li>The bamboo was cut so the joint of the bamboo was open and the other side was closed. </li></ul><ul><li>Bamboo was cut into many strips </li></ul><ul><li>The stripes rattled when the dancers danced </li></ul>

Single Rattle ‘Uli’uli <ul><li>This rattle was another kind of rattle </li></ul><ul><li>This rattle was made of coconut shell or a gourd </li></ul><ul><li>Rattle had shells or rocks inside </li></ul><ul><li>Later learned how to put kapa covered with feathers on the other side of the handle </li></ul>
  8. 8. Three Gourd Rattle ‘Ulili <ul><li>Put three gourds on a stick </li></ul><ul><li>Middle gourd could move </li></ul><ul><li>Pulled middle cord and middle gourd moved </li></ul><ul><li>End of the gourds sometimes had small stones inside </li></ul>
  9. 9. Conch Pu <ul><li>The pu shell was a trumpet </li></ul><ul><li>Made a very loud noise </li></ul><ul><li>Heard from 2 miles away </li></ul>
  10. 10. Summary <ul><li>Hawaiians used many instruments for many different things. </li></ul><ul><li>For music, stories and many more </li></ul>
