• Figure that out….. 300 calories = 3 packages of 100 calorie Keebler chocolate cookies so that’s only 42.9 laughs in the am and 42.9 from 12 – 5. Laughter releases endorphins that are more powerful than morphine. These endorphins can lead to a sense of well-being and optimism.
  • So tell me an employer that wouldn’t appreciate having a person with a sense of humor on their team vs. the doom and gloom guy that is so down he won’t be happy until everyone is where they are… in the dumps!
  • Who are these guys??
  • It’s really the employees that create a fun workplace. It’s a managers job to appreciate and facilitate fun activities and to not get in the way of them.
  • An organization’s work environment is both tangible and intangible. It has its physical structure the boards and mortar but it also has spirit and heart, is yours in the right place….. Very punny staff member – enjoys - Humor for Lexophiles (Lover of words) Did you hear about the guy who was in a car accident and his left side was cut off? He’s all right now. One for today’s economy – A lot of money these days is tainted: ‘Taint yours and ‘taint mine.”
  • The Fish Philosophy – “Pike Place Fish Co.” Seattle Washington Follow four basic principles: Play! Make their Day! Be There! Choose Your Attitude!
  • Adults learn and retain information best through interaction and involvement. Experience in Dr. Latches class – Analysis of Northern lands (natural science class)
  • A plateau is a high form of flattery. Bet you work 5 days a week – but you’re calendar’s days are numbered. At SCNM – A successful Acupuncture is a jab well done.
  • People will generally respond more favorably to you if you smile while talking to them – Use a constant reminder of the importance of smiling keep a mirror near the phone you can look at your smiling reflection, which of course will keep you smiling. Or tack a smile post it on your phone. Kind of like … A will is a dead giveaway. Or a backward poet writes inverse.
  • Bulletin boards, electronic mail, intra-office memos, voice mail, etc. all offer mediums through which we can share humor with co-workers. Golf outing – Bowling – Team challenges – “best” hat, tacky tea shirts, junk jewelry, cubicles …… Imp define what is fun and what is not good humor – harmful humor, off color jokes, negative humor, sexual humor can get us all in trouble.
  • Now we know how lucky we are to not have any stress in our day to day interactions with student, parents, faculty,….. Dr. Cousins refers to it as a “train wreck of the mind” At the moment we experience humor, feelings like depression, anger, and anxiety dissolve.
  • Hunter Campbell "Patch" Adams, M.D. (born May 28 , 1945 in Washington, D.C. ) is an American medical physician , social activist, citizen diplomat , professional clown , performer, and author . He founded the Gesundheit! Institute in 1972. Each year he organizes a group of volunteers from around the world to travel to various countries where they dress as clowns, to bring hope and joy to orphans , patients, and the people. In 1998 he also visited Bosnia , one of the Balkan Peninsula countries torn apart by the war that started after the break-up of Yugoslavia.
  • Brilliant (real name) Brilliant Thoughts / Pot-Shots: No man is an island – put some of us are long peninsulas – (As a UP-per) “ I always know the right thing to say. After the right time has passed to say it.” “The older you get, the more important it is to NOT act your age”.
  • Cheryl Crow’s All I wanna do is have some fun, I got a feeling I’m not the only one. - Girls just wanna have fun Cindy Lauper – Girls Just wanna have fun
  • Katherine Hepburn said “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun”
  • Abe Lincoln said “A person will be just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
  • Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end. How about the guy that broke into song because he couldn’t find the key.
  • If you can’t find it fake it…. If you suffer from terminal seriousness or know others that do, just start laughing and smiling for no reason and you and those around you will catch the contagiousness of the moment.
  • “ Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Confucius
  • They say it takes 30 days of repetition to make any action a habit
  • Groucho glasses – kind with the big nose and mustache, Card – I’ts a nice twist and sends some humor to someone who’s young-at-heart. OR eggs and bacon arranged on the plate like eyes and a mouth.
  • Everyone is curious to check out the new cartoon
  • Behavioralist know that if you want to reinforce a habit just recognize that habit. Remove a bad habit by ignoring it or apply a consequence to the habit. Simple psychology. So if you want to improve attendance reward attendance.
  • Dave Hemsath – “301 ways to have fun at work” compiled from a survey
  • Dozens of companies are finding out that employees who laugh together stay together, produce more, invent more and work more cohesively as a team. – HR Magazine March 1994

    5. 5. Did you know that ...

Every time you have a good hearty laugh, you burn up 3 and 1/2 calories?

Laughing increases oxygen intake, thereby replenishing and invigorating cells? It also increases the pain threshold, boosts immunity, and relieves stress.

    6. 6. Smiling statistics

Dr. David Abramis at Cal State Long Beach has studied fun at work for years. He's discovered that people who have fun on the job:

are more creative,

more productive,

better decision-makers,

    10. 10. Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs
    11. 11. Why bring your funny bone to work??

A work environment that cultivates fun – grows in energy, self-esteem and team spirit

In working environments where humor is supported there develops a culture that utilizes the humor to reduce stress and provide perspective.

Learning to laugh at ourselves and our work lightens the load. In today’s times we need humor more than ever.

    12. 12. Humor energizes us…

A fun culture motivates and nurtures “want to” vs. “got to”

Productivity is a performance art; the person that performs well succeeds.

Fun is an important tool in the trainer’s belt.

Infuse your training with acts of fun and you will engage your audience

    13. 13. Humor energizes us…

Fun is an integral element of adult learning and helps to facilitate lasting effects

Fun creates enthusiasm and excitement in learning something new; it stimulates the senses

A fun culture means being prepared to break out of the box – doing the unexpected – willingness to look or be silly

    14. 14. Humor helps communication…

Humor can provide a non-threatening means through which an employee or employer can communicate with others without intensifying the emotional temperature of the relationship.

Consider the frazzled secretary who posts the sign -

"I have only two speeds, and if this one isn't fast enough then I'm sure you're not going to like my other."

OR "A Creative Mess is better than Tidy Idleness."

The secretary's sign pokes fun at the situation, and the boss's note pokes some fun at himself.

    15. 15. Humor helps communication…

A smile can also have a positive effect on the sound of your voice.

If you communicate in a fun memorable way, you will grab the attention of your audience

It will engage their interest and enliven their willingness to act.

Communication is a vital key for success in every organization

    16. 16. Humor builds relationships…

Humor can facilitate the development of staff cohesion and a sense of team effort in the workplace

Fun is a social glue: it gets individuals to stick together, and it creates camaraderie in teams;

It soothes the natural tensions that arise when people work together.

Office jokes taking the seriousness of work lightly provide us with the opportunity to become more connected with others.

    17. 17. Humor Reduces Stress…

Work is often associated with stress, and we know that stress is one of the main causes of illness, absenteeism, employee burn-out, etc.

Humor is a great stress reliever because it makes us feel good, and we can't feel good and feel stress simultaneously.

Dr. Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness, brought to our attention how laughter can be healing or reduce symptoms.

    18. 18. Humor Reduces Stress…

Humor and its fallout, laughter, reduce stress by activating the physiological systems including the muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular, and skeletal.

This fact results in the loss of muscle control, as many of us have, when we laugh so hard that we fall down or wet our pants.

Laughter has been labeled a jogging and juggling of the internal organs. When we laugh we feel physically better, and after laughter we feel lighter and more relaxed.

Humor provides a psychological stress reducer as it snaps our thinking to another channel.

    19. 19. Humor Provides Perspective…

Another way in which humor lightens the load of the workplace is by providing perspective.

Ashleigh Brilliant (known for his one- liners often found on postcards) says, "Distance doesn't really make you any smaller, but it does make you part of a bigger picture."

Consider the Ziggy cartoon where Ziggy is lying on the psychiatrist's couch and the psychiatrist is saying, "The whole world isn't against you...there are BILLIONS of people who don't care one way or the other."

    20. 20. 12 steps to fun or How to recover your funny bone

Start with yourself

Don’t wait for someone else to start the fun – find your own

Discover your funny bone; examine how you spend your time and what you can change to split your sides

Create your own style, get zany, anything goes (almost)

    21. 21. 12 steps to fun

Inspire fun in others

Be a role model for fun

Recognize and support the effort of others in the creation of fun.

Give gifts that stimulate fun and spontaneity

    25. 25. 12 steps to fun

Eliminate boundaries and obstacles that inhibit fun

Fun is contagious, let it travel thru the organization giving it energy and life.

Make it a goal to find and remove obstacles that stop the flow of fun.

    26. 26. 12 steps to fun

Follow your intuition; be spontaneous

Don’t wait for fun to find you – make it occur whenever anyone needs a boost.

Surprise is half the fun; use it to refresh your work and team.

    27. 27. 12 steps to fun

Don’t Postpone your fun (or mine)

Fun is not a reward for completing a task;

It is the lubricant for getting things done well and effectively with others;

Make it a daily part of your routine!

    28. 28. 12 steps to fun

Make fun inclusive

Fun is for sharing

The moment you exclude another from the fun it stops being fun

“ The more the merrier” is the best attitude to adopt.

    29. 29. 12 steps to fun

SMILE!
