Editor's Notes

• Internet & Social Media
• We are going to Explore some Basic Online Marketing Concepts. I am going to introduce you to some Jargons, that is the terminology we internet marketers use. This should be useful for you to explore more when you get back home. Finally, I am going to talk about ‘how to get started’ on promoting your ideas or business. If you are a beginner, this should be useful. Some of you might be doing this already. In a nut-shell, I am just going to give you some directions & tools. Next: Marketing & Internet Let us quickly talk about how Internet has changed the way we market. Internet & Social Media
• First let us have a look at the traditional marketing…. Same message is being passed on to everyone. Then came the internet. Internet & Social Media
• With the internet becoming popular, we starting promoting the products / ideas on the internet. We just had basic websites – it worked more like a brochure on the internet. But the communication has improved. The website is able to reach to many people at the same time. Thus, communication primarily moved to One to Many. This is another form of traditional marketing in terms of what it is offering. Then came the publishing revolution. Internet & Social Media
• In the traditional marketing for you to become a publisher of a video, you need to have a studio. But now, ALL you need is your mobile phone. This allowed people to start producing a lot of digital assets. Then came the blogging platform to make the publishing easier. Social networks to connect & share the content. Simultaneously Search engine marketing and email marketing also evolved. Let us look at the changes this has brought in…. Internet & Social Media
• The communication mode has changed. Now it is not any more one to many. It is many to many. More people started publishing. The web has become social, this resulted in an on-going dialogue. This has also made the message to differ from person to person. Dynamic websites & personalization helped this. Now, we come to the web as on today…. Internet & Social Media
• The communication has become real time – IMs, Twitter, GoogleWave. The web is Social – everyone can publish. Everyone has an opinion to share with you. And they are not just communicating with you … but they are listening to each other. Web is all about conversation now – no more selling. Web became personal – your personal branding is important. Though you represent an organization, people want to know who you actually are… what kind of personality you bring on to the conversation… remember, we are communicating with real people … not demographics or Markets. The web is about participation and collaboration. To sum up, its all about making friends online. Internet & Social Media
• Now, let us look at the social nature of the web. This is popularly called as Social Media… Internet & Social Media
• Let us understand the web as a social platform based on what the users are doing…. More and more people are publishing. People are listening to what you publish. If they like, they will follow you. Sharing everything – images, documents, videos. They are making friends. Participating on the web. You will find many review sites on the web. Don’t forget the word of mouth & email / IM messages that you can’t see on the web. Finally, they are collaborating. Here is a LARGER version of these conversations. The conversation Prism.
