To get a certification the social workerfor example should have taken the substanceabuse counselor certificate program where theycan acquire the needed skills when interactingwith abusers.

Theprogram provides applicants the education andthe needed training that are required by theDepartment of Alcohol and Drug. Applicantsshould complete the requirements for the saidprogram for them to be able to apply for theCADC or Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.The state will provide applicants with thelocations where they can have their internshipsand have their counselor positions.

To have a substance abusecounselor certification means that the counselor thatis helping the patient’s recovery is equipped withskills to deal with the abuser’s attitude.

Here are the requirements that are needed for anapplicant to become a substance abuse counselor:• The applicant should have a high school diploma.• The applicant should have a total of 270 hours ofADAD or Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, anapproved course for substance abuse. Theperformance of the applicant should pass theassessment, case management, counseling,professional responsibility and client education.• The following courses may be included in thesubstance abuse course.• The applicant should have a total of 400 hours ofpractical training that focuses on the treating alcoholand drug addiction through counseling.
  7. 7. • Should also have 6000 hours or 3 years of workexperience in providing counseling services to clientsthat abused alcohol and drug substances.• The 6000 hours can be substituted by 2000 hourswork experience when the applicant took abachelor’s degree that has a major in humanservices field.• 4000 hours work experience can be a substitutewhen the applicant took master’s degree or a levelhigher in human services field.• The applicant must have a program certificate foralcohol and drug counseling with Associates Degreeas a substitute for the 2000 hours work experience.• A statement signed with agreeing with Codes ofEthics that will abide the CSAC Code of Ethics.
  8. 8. • Should have completed the International WrittenCertification Examination that is provided for Alcohol andDrug Abuse Counselors.• Case Presentation Method Oral Examination should becompleted by the applicant.• Transcripts and forms that are sent by the schoolsupervisor of the applicants. The applicants should submitforms that have original signatures. Signatures are notallowed when sent through fax.• The applicant should pay the needed fees for theapplication.• After the applicant has submitted the all the neededrequirements and successfully passed the examinations, theDepartment will now give the substance abuse counselorcertification.

The recoveryperiod of the client may take a long time, but itwill give the counselor a relief when their patientshave recovered from their addiction.With CADC providing the substance abusecounselor certification to people who want to helptheir friends or relatives that has substanceabuse is easier.
