  • A STORY OF PENCIL A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point, he asked: Are you writing a story about what we’ve done? Is it a story about me? His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson: I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up. Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn’t seem very special. But it’s just like any other pencil, I’ve ever seen! That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on to them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world. First quality: You are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God, and He always guides us according to His will. Second quality: now and than, I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but afterwards his much sharper. So you, too must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows, because they will make you a better person.Third quality: the pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing. It helps to keep us on the road to justice. Fourth quality: what really matter in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you. Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark. In just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action.

LOOK AT PROBLEMS IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS, AND FIND NEW PERSPECTIVES THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS TAKEN LEONARDO DA VINCI believed that, to gain knowledge about the form of a problem, you begin by learning how to restructure it in many different ways. He felt that the first way he looked at a problem was too biased. Often, the problem itself is reconstructed and becomes a new one. The first one who think of contact lenses in his Codex on the Eye ; described an optical method for correcting refraction defects by immersing the eye in a water – filled tube that was sealed with a lens.C.V. RAMAN (1888 – 1970) "For His New Perspectives Work On The Scattering Of Light And For The Discovery Of The Effect Named After Him"The first Asian scientist C.V. Raman won the Nobel Prize for Physics, with simple equipment barely worth RS. 300. He was a man of boundless curiosity and a lively sense of humor. His spirit of inquiry and devotion to science laid the foundations for scientific research in India. And he won honor as a scientist and affection as a teacher and a man. One day in 1903, Professor Eliot of Presidency College, Madras, saw a little boy in his B.A. Class. Thinking that he might have strayed into the room, the Professor asked, "Are you a student of the B.A. class?" "Yes Sir," the boy answered. "Your name?" "C.V. Raman." This little incident made the fourteen- year-old boy well known in the college. The youngster was later to become a world famous scientist.2. VISUALIZE! ALWAYS-NEW IDEASALBERTEINSTEIN (1879-1955)When thought through a problem, he always found it necessary to formulate his subject in as many different ways as possible, including using diagrams. He visualized solutions, and believed that words and numbers as such did not play a significant role in his thinking process. He has turned the scientific ideas of Issac Newton upside down; according to him, there is no such thing as absolute time or motion. From the Earth the rocket seems to shrink (Length contraction) and time on the rocket seems to be running slow (Time Dilation). For the rocket pilot, however, time seems to be running normally on board but to be running slow on Earth.  Around 1886 he began his school career in Munich and his violin lessons, and also had religious education. In 1895 Einstein failed an examination that would have allowed him to study for a diploma as an electrical engineer. Following the failing of the entrance exam to the ETH, Indeed Einstein succeeded with his plan graduating in 1900 as a teacher of mathematics and physics. Three of Einstein's fellow students, including Grossmann, were appointed assistants at ETH in Zurich but clearly Einstein had not impressed enough. Then Grossmann's father tried to help Einstein get a job by recommending him to the director of the patent office in Bern where he worked from 1902 to 1909.He published a series of papers, starting in 1905, on diffusion, viscosity, and the photoelectric effect and created the Special and General Theories of Relativity. Later in 1905 Einstein showed how mass and energy were equivalent. By 1909 Einstein was recognized as a leading scientific thinker and in that year he resigned from the patent office and became a full professor. Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921 but not for relativity rather for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect. Although Einstein's later thoughts were neglected for decades, physicists today refer seriously and awesomely to Einstein's dream - a grand unification of physical theory. 3. PRODUCE! A DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTIC OF GENIUS IS PRODUCTIVITY.THOMAS EDISON (1847 - 1931) held 1,093 patents. He guaranteed productivity by giving himself and his assistant’s idea quotas. In a study of 2,036 scientists throughout history, Dean Keith Simonton of the University of California at Davis found that the most respected scientists produced not only great works, but also many "bad" ones. They weren't afraid to fail, or to produce mediocre in order to arrive at excellence.127 years ago, an idea changed your world. It was Thomas A. Edison’s motivation that snuffed out ten thousand failures and, finally, switched on the incandescent electric light to beam the great electrical age into our lives and homes. Edison had a slow start in life. He was expelled from school because people did not realise that he was deaf, thinking instead that he was unable to learn. His mother taught him at home, where he had built his own laboratory by the time he was 10 years old. As a boy, Edison worked as a gatekeeper at his father's observatory for tourists, and worked on a railway selling newspapers and candy to passengers. He was nicknamed the "Wizard of Menlo Park," in part because of his stunning success with the invention of the phonograph in 1877.4. MAKE NOVEL COMBINATIONS. COMBINE, AND RECOMBINE, IDEAS, IMAGES, AND THOUGHTS INTO DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS NO MATTER HOW INCONGRUENT OR UNUSUAL.The laws of heredity on which the modern science of genetics is based came from the Austrian monk GREGO MENDEL (1822 - 1884), who combined mathematics and biology to create a new science. He deduced from experiment on crossing peas that hereditary factors determining traits went in pairs and that the recessive characteristic was only expressed in the plant when both parents had that characteristic.5. FORM RELATIONSHIPS; MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN DISSIMILAR SUBJECTS.JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE, a name every Indian should boast of and the invention was Radio wave communication. Sir Bose, today is internationally famous as the father of modern plant biology ; who explained that plants also suffer pain like us. So, it is, by far, an exceptional case, that a single person is creating landmarks in two apparently non-correlated fields, and the man who can perform this miracle, is a genius indeed.In his short story, entitled, "The Exile", celebrity author Leo Tolstoy made a comment, "God sees the truth, but waits..". That's what exactly happened in case of Sir J.C. Bose. In the year 1899, he came out with solid-state diode. Further, he made a device called "Coherer" which could transmit and receive radio waves, which used a mercury tube and telephone. But, unfortunately, the world knew Marconi as the inventor of Radio waves for 100 years. Marconi applied for a patent on that device on the 9th September 1901. Finally Marconi was told to deliver a lecture on his invention in The Royal Institution, London on the 13th June 1902. Now the time came for Marconi to answer to that most important question, "Who is the inventor of the coherer that uses mercury?" He was shrewd enough to find out some mean tactics to create even more confusion and to keep the works of Sir Bose unveiled… Gradually, he began to shift towards "mercury coherer" from "iron coherer", i.e., Bose's coherer, but never made any reference to Sir Bose. But, truth can never be concealed. After the untiring efforts of many years, some Indian scientists throughout the globe recently have come out with original facts. IEEE also has accepted these things and declared this phenomenon as one of the greatest blunders in the history of scientific inventions. 6. THINK IN OPPOSITES BUT IN POSITVE MODE GIVE THE SOLUTION OF UNANSWERED PROBLEMS.APJ A Kalam:AvulPakirJainulabdeen Abdul Kalam born in 1931, is one of the India’s most distinguished scientists who is the founder of SLV-3 India’s first satellite launch vehicle. He even worked as team leader but always gave the credit to team for every success and took responsibility when were failure. He is nicknamed the "Missile Man “ in part because of his stunning success with the creation of the missiles, who strengthens country in defense creates a new context in which to view the problem. Always kept attention away from the distracting details of the difficulty and examine the situation in a new or different light and, after exploring information and options, choose an appropriate course of action to succeed. One day a father and his rich family took his young son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be.  They spent a day and a night in the farm of a very poor family.  When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"Very good, Dad!""Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked."Yeah!"  "And what did you learn?"The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four.  We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end.  We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars.  Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon.When the little boy was finishing, his father was speechless. His son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!" Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things?  If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude toward life, you've got everything!You can't buy any of these things.  You can have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc., but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing!7. THINK METAPHORICALLY.ARISTOTLE (394–322 BC)Greek philosopher considered metaphor a sign of genius, and believed that the individual who had the capacity to perceive resemblances between two separate areas of existence and link them together was a person of special gifts. The diving bell which already existed in ancient times was described in detail by him. 8. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR CHANCE.Whenever we attempt to do something and fail, we end up doing something else. That is the first principle of creative accident. Failure can be productive only if we do not focus on it as an unproductive result. Instead: analyze the process, its components, and how you can change them, to arrive at other results. Do not ask the question "Why have I failed?", but rather "What have I done?" The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
  • TRY TO KEEP COURAGE OF LINCOLN Once upon a time there was a young man who was born to poverty-stricken parents. He wasn’t able to go to school, so he taught himself. He dreamed of being a lawyer, but no one would hire him. When he completed military service, he decided to use his self-administered study of the law to enter politics, so he ran for a seat in the senate. He was defeated by a large margin. So he temporarily retired from that and politics and became a storekeeper. His store went bankrupt, and he spent the next seventeen years of his life paying off his debts, picking up whatever odd jobs he could. But his daydreams continued to urge him on. He fell in love, married, struggled to support his family, and then again entered politics – as a candidate for Congress. He was elected by very narrow margin, but when he ran for re-election, he was humiliatingly defeated. Next he tried to get a position with the US land office, but they refused to hire him.  It seemed that everywhere he went, he was ridiculed because of his poor background, has lack of education and social graces. He held up his head, ignored his hurt pride, and decided to run for the US senate. Both his friends and enemies, even his family, laughed at him behind his back. Once again he was defeated. Eventually, he was nominated for Vice- President at the political convention of a major party. On the final ballot, he lost again – to a political unknown. Running again for the senate, he waged a campaign which captured the imagination of a nation, but which resulted in only another defeat. Still he never stopped following his “daydreams”. He didn’t dwell on his failures. He continued to intensely and fiercely pursue the ideals and principles in which he believed. And finally, at the age of fifty, Wounded by heartache and scarred by repeated defeats, but still clinging fast to his destined life path, Abraham Lincoln President of the USA.

  • BIG ROCKSOne day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered overachievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz". Then he pulled out a one gallon, wide mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?" Everyone in the class said, "Yes." Then he said, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?" By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?" "No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good." Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it". "No," the speaker replied, "That's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all." What are the 'big rocks' in your life? Your children; Your loved ones; Your education; Your dreams; A worthy cause; Teaching or mentoring others; Doing things that you love; Time for yourself; Your health; Your significant other. Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all. So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the 'big rocks' in my life? Then, put those in your jar first.
  • Sharpen Your Skills! Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job from a timber merchant, and got one. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.   "Congratulations," the boss said.. "Go on that way!" Very motivated by the boss' words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees. "I must be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. "When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked. "Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees".   Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to "Sharpen the axe." In today's world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less happy than ever.   Why is it so? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp? There's nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But at the same time we need to learn more and sharpen our skills.   We all need time to take care of who we really are as spiritual beings,   Find time to chant HARE KRISHNA/RAMRAM/HARI AUM/WAAHEY GURU/JESUS,    Read, designate time for family, and relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow.   If we don't take time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness.   So start today,   Think about the ways by which you could do your job more effectively and add a lot of value to it and those around you.
  • A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.This story teaches two lessons:1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill him or her.Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words... it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another.
