The Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) - A Flexible Study Abroad Experience Designed for US students!
SiPN is a new project developed by the Luso-American Foundation for Development (FLAD). It enjoys the support of the Portuguese government and US Embassy in Lisbon, the Fulbright Commission of Portugal, the City Council of Lisbon, and AICEP - Portugal’s official export promotion agency.
SiPN is a consortium whose members currently include: ISCTE-IUL, the Catholic University of Portugal, the University of Lisbon and the NOVA University of Lisbon. It is a flexible academic study abroad program that is designed for North American students of any major and/or level of fluency in Portuguese. In fact, students may take all of their classes in Portuguese through direct enrollment in any of the member schools’ regular courses, or they may choose to take most of their coursework in English while they build fluency in the language. SiPN builds upon the momentum of the Erasmus Program, which attracted nearly ten thousand European students to Portugal in 2012 (European Commission) and is designed as a program that brings Portuguese, American, and other international mobility students together into the same classrooms and living quarters.
The curriculum design allows for a typical hybrid study abroad model, but since it is a consortium it is designed to allow for maximum flexibility so we can accommodate different student needs. The hybrid study abroad model means that those students who are not yet ready to take all of their coursework in Portuguese may nevertheless find they can still cover their major or general education-type requirements through a wide array of offerings taught in English, and whose themes in our core curriculum are focused on Portugal and/or the Lusophone world. Besides the core offerings in the social sciences and humanities, students will also be able to take Portuguese language courses at whatever level they need, or choose from the hundreds of other courses taught in English each semester, many of which are found in business and economics. More advanced Portuguese learners have even greater choices and can elect to take all of their coursework in Portuguese at any of the 4 schools in the consortium in virtually any field, providing for a fully immersive experience.
SiPN’s flexible curriculum is available in semester, year-long, or summer formats. The price of the program ($11,000/semester) includes not only tuition, but also airport transfers, housing, health and travel insurance while in country and en route, field trips organized through the program, pre- and post-travel cultural orientation, as well as monitored support from the moment of application until the student returns and their school receives their transcripts.
All credits are issued in ECTS directly from the Portuguese member universities.
